Why is Logic Pro only on macs

Buy a Mac Mini to run the host, then use Wormhole or something to use all your PC plugs on your PC.

How good/bad are the Mac Minis, and how well would they work for music/audio things?

The dual core intel mac minis are actually suprisingly capable little machines, particularly running Logic.

I've only read the reviews, but the Intel processors seem to be about on par with the G5. You'll probably have to take a closer look at what sort of bus the machine has, and the dual core may outperform a single G5 -- one review suggested that the dual core iMac only outperforms the single G5 predecessor for that reason, but as a rule of thumb I'd equate them.

The dual-core Macbooks seem to be very close to the dual G5's as far as Logic performance goes. I think it's pretty amazing that I can get workstation performance on a machine I can tuck under my arm on the train. The next batch of Macs with the Core Duo 2 chips should be even better. The Mini is a step down from the laptops, of course, but still a pretty capable machine.

It will be very interesting to see how well Live 6 runs on these machines, assuming that Ableton delivers on their promise of dual-core support.

.. i for one am very dissapointed by Logic since apple acquired it. that old ancient audio-engine is still there, the same old bugs that bug me are still there, there's no topmodern movement in sight while the competitors offer it ..

I understand your frustration but after spending some time with some other hosts I'm appreciating Logic much more again.

Logic is only available for mac because Apple bought Logic, and they only make software for mac. I'm sure they didn't intend any offense to pc only users. Being a mac and pc user, I would prefer to edit on pc if they were fast and stable enough, as windows interface is much faster to use than OS X, even down to the mouse acceleration curve.

Indeed.
For me it's impossible to work with anything else, mainly because of the MIDI editing and the brilliant audio engine (oh well, and the reconfigurable mixer).
Fortunately, the MacBook is getting closer, it seems. Just got a new musical job and a few other ones... guess it'll be there in time with NI starting to port their stuff.
Been seriously thinking about an iMac as well, but I just love being mobile.

FWIW, anybody interested in a possible switch without mobility requirements, those iMacs seem to be really great and finally something you could even call a bargain. No wasted space, a brilliantly looking large display, just nice. Connectivity is a bit limited though, not sure what sort of an audio interface one should use with them.

Oh, while we're at it: Anybody knows about some Express Card audio interfaces already?

Well, Quicktime and iTunes beg to differ with your assessment.

Speaking of which, I vaguely remember reading once that Quicktime was likely the second most widely-installed software next to Windows.

Fortunately, these days there's alternatives. QT under Windows has got to be the lousiest application ever. Let alone you can't automatically update older versions any longer. So you gotta download their package including iTunes - something that will NEVER see my PC at all. The same goes for an iPod - as much as I like the design, an MP3 player requiring iTunes to be installed is just ridiculous. With almost any other player I connect it, it appears as a new drive and I'm dragging my files over. Too bad, as said, I really like the iPod design, especially the Nanos.
