Hi, I remember reading once that there is a way to record any audio that is coming out of your computer. Can someone please explain to me how to do this.
Would be very useful for sampling some sounds of game roms and other things ;)
cheers

Software like Total Recorder will do the trick.

Then import the result into SX2 (assuming you did mention SX2 for a reason).
The more I hang around at KVR the less music I make.

Thanks, but I'm sure there's a way cubase can do it directly...

Try to use the multimedia driver in cubase.
It can be used by more than one program at once.
I have done it many times with Cool Edit.
Start your application for recording and press play on your source.

Tried it but don't really know what you mean. Argh, sorry! Please be more specific.

Get TapeIt, from Silverspike.

You might also be able to route your outputs back to inputs on your audio interface's driver.

AFAIK, there's no way to route outputs to inputs in Cubase itself.

EDIT: Sorry, I was thinking you wanted to record the output of your host. If you want the output of games, system sound, etc, you can usually set your multimedia driver's record source to "sum" or "mix" or whatever the driver calls it. In the Windows Volume control.

Anyway, if that doesn't work, you can always just patch it with a cable. Yeah, it'll your copy will have passed through analog and back to digital then, but if you're only recording game sound (or whatever) maybe quality isn't so important?

Vdub is another good "recording anything from your computer" program.

Got a link for that?

Bourgeois: Cubase is not a good program for doing this sort of thing. Cubase likes to hog the ASIO driver and soundcard and generally isn't made for capturing "what you hear". You'd be better off downloading something like the free audio editor "Audacity" and using that.

Depending on your soundcard, you should be able to route things internally using the soundcards mixer. That's how I've sampled games etc multimedia things.

Basically, you want your multimedia output routed to cubase inputs.

If your soundcard doesn't allow this, there are things like 'Virtual Audio Cable' (google for it) that does the trick as well.

Thumbs up for this (or wavelab or any basic audio editor). For tasks like this, avoid using ASIO soundcard drivers like plaque, as well.
