you are right... to an extent. I have been able to approximate it. Actually, using a variax i used to own. And the podxt. Guitar rig 2 does ok with it too.Hovmod wrote:Is it wrong of me to assume that SRV's tone was as much in his fingers and brain as in the equipment he used? I think he would sound like SRV playing a Variax through Cyanide 2.

I'm old and old school (been playing guitar for almost fifty years). Can anyone tell me how to get the "Leslie West" sound (you know, like the tone he gets on "Missisippi Queen") out of FreeAmp? I got it once a long time ago with hardware, using an old Fender Bassman head with all the knobs cranked all the way up, in conjunction with a Fender Bassman bottom (the one with the closed back and 2 12" speakers), but I've never been able to achieve the sound with an amp sim. It seems that amp sims are mostly concerned with heavy distortion sounds, not that smooth sustained overdrive sound like Leslie West achieved. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Yeah I haven't gotten it with my PODxt, I'd be interested to see how you did it, if you have a patch handy.Jason Brian Merrill wrote:actually, SRVs tone would be hard to nail with this sim as well, for me. And that is also essential, or at least an approximation or interpretation of it with my own style overlaid.MadChicken wrote: I like a real variety, especially in the low/mid gain sounds; and am therefore very pleased with FreeAmp.
His sound was big strings, tuned down half step, tweaked twins, dumbles, and bassmans (I think) and tremendous finger strength. Playing LOUD too. I don't have none of that

Fixed reverb - Now goes to a smaller size
Fixed Compressor meters, two instances should not be a problem
Fixed label on the compressor for the meters

Jason, what's happened to you lately? You used to be so nice and friendly. Lately, I've noticed you've changed... ...and it's not just on this forum either. You've not been too nice or friendly on the reaper forum either. What's happened? I respect you a lot, I really do. I just find your recent change troubling. Are things going OK for you?
I mean this as a friend, and I hope you don't take any offense from my post or anything. (I hope you consider me a friend too.)

By the way, Jason, I apologize. I noticed that you clarified your comments and don't seem to be being negative in this post. I guess I was concerned about some of the posts I read regarding Reaper. You've always been such a friendly and helpful guy. I was worried that something was wrong.
Once again, I apologize. I meant no offense.
Still friends?

I was also really late to getting back to this thread. (I was like 8 pages behind, and just posted when I got to the above message, without reading the other pages and seeing your clarification. My fault.

Ok, another mp3...same riff I was using in the last two, except slightly tighter. This tone has a more "Boxy" quality to it...it's 4 tracks, 2 panned hard left and hard right, with the other two panned slightly off center, opposite eachother. 1 preset for the first 2, and 1 preset for the 2nd two.

After listening, and playing a few different riffs...I've heard the lack of tightness that JBM was refferring to...maybe this can be solved with a better gate algorithm (
)...either way, I still think it's very useful, has a damn sexy GUI, and for christ's sake, it's free people...may not fit all tastes, but I'll hold on to it.
Thanks Fretted Synth.
(BTW, works beautifully at 48khz/24 bit.
Although, I forgot to dither it down in the mp3 above
)
Peace

I dont think a gate algorithm can help it... it sort of sounds like a wet blanket over everything.
ill post some examples of my own in a bit.

nice frank. i think part of the problem too, is that people aren't listening in context of a song with the full mix. drums, bass, etc, guitar is not meant to be an all encompassing dominating thing, atleast imo. it's meant to contribute to the final mix
a huge stand-alone 'wall of guitar' tone is going to be hard to position in mix i'd think. but anyway to each their own. i see what you mean about the muddiness though, the warp vst demo definitely has a hard assed edge to it.
what sonic trick is it playing? maybe joe could sculpt it into freeamp if it's not something too hard or out of context?

Yeah, They do sound monsterously dominating with the "wall" practice applied, when played on their own. However, when set back into the mix, and eq'd nicely to fit in with the other instruments, they can really just wrap everything together...think Terry Date type production....deftone's Around The Fur and White Pony Albums...The riff I'm playing is actually from a now defunct detroit band called Factory 81. I don't know, it depends on what you're going for.grymmjack wrote:nice frank. i think part of the problem too, is that people aren't listening in context of a song with the full mix. drums, bass, etc, guitar is not meant to be an all encompassing dominating thing, atleast imo. it's meant to contribute to the final mix

As for the WarpVST sound...I have no idea how they implemented it, apparently they developed it with Hughes & Vetner , but I don't think they actually copied the signal patch...From the credits on the about page of the plugin, it seems that they just tried to match the tone by ear. The 3 cabinet models do have a very nice sound to them, even now that the plug is out of commision and around 5 years old. I still use it now and then. I personally don't like the clean amp model on it, but for thrash and trash distortion, it rips everything else to shreds. You might be able to find it second hand somewhere...I remember seeing a copy going on ebay for 20 dollars.
Peace
