Well, the M42 Nebula is already one of my favorite synths. The M42 v2 is a little harder to see, to be honest. My only gripes are with the GUI and not the sound. I find the pink to be hard to see and the numbers are tiny. My secondary monitor is at 1280 x 1024. My primary monitor is at a disgusting 1600 x 1280 or something like that (and has to be due to Sonar 5 and other software being so complex). I have to program on my secondary or chance losing my eyesight.
The M42 V2 sounds like a dream and a half. It is so much fun to program that it's scary. Now that I bought my beloved CME UF8 88 key controller with all those sliders and knobs, I am going to start using the MIDI learn feature of the M42 V2 right away!!!
In fact, other than the skin, I think the M42 V2 would be hard to compete with. It is so good at doing evolving and ambient textures it's incredible. Combine that with the ability to load your own soundfonts (wave files would be nice too) and it is an amazing combination.
You two rock (Tim and Dr. Ambient). I can only hope that my soundset and presets do the M42 Nebula true justice. I will do my best to make sure that happens.

Hi Tim,
M42 was the first VSTi I've installed after disaster and I've spent near 3 hours playing with it. Great!!!

To be honest, no, I didn't bother with the demo this time. Up until two years ago I bought every VSTi in site but since then I am a VERY hard sale. But, I went back and listened to the MP3's of M42v2 this morning while at work. Very inspiring stuff. Enough so that I finally broke over and bought it without trying the demo again.tconrardy wrote:so..anyone try the version 2 demo???..what do ya think?
Tim, if I slide back into the depths of VSTi addiction (better known as being a VSTi hore) I just want you to know that it is your fault.
All I need to be happy is one more VSTi.

yeah...you can blame me if you want..I am in the same position as you, and I think I still download every syth that comes up here in instruments to try out. You never know when you will find IT. But M42 is IT for me!
Glad you liked the demos. We had an interesting mail to support the other day on how much he disliked the demos when I feel it's my most intricate work. But it might be that "Totem" sound. However you can do regular stuff and no Totems as well with M42.
I've tried to program the Totem sound on other synths, but it's just not the same as M42.M42 has that "majik" quality about it for some reason. Hard to explain.

Zvon,
Julie kicks serious butt! Listen to Dreamcatcher (http://www.mfelkerco.com/products - scroll down to the bottom and choose Dreamcatcher to listen to) - I love the way the M42 sounds using The Julie soundfont.
Seriously, everyone should buy everything from Zvon - good quality - totally affordable.

Seriously, I've got to bump this if for no other reason that when laying tracks for my songs 2 years ago I got to sample the m42 and am still in awe of the uniqueness of the ensuing sound. I didn't even know what an adsr was until I saw a friend playing with this thing so I decided it was time to learn synths (never had occured to me that I'd like them if Journey or whomever wasn't the one playing them hehe).
Wicked, wicked Totem sounds - I'd forgotten what that was called. =)

Hi runagate
Glad that M42 is getting you to learn some synthesis, as theres a lot going on thats not immeadiatly noticable, like the ability to modulate each segment of the envelope( A,D,S, R) with an LFO or the Pulsar! Also the ability to modulate between SF2s samples with the LFO or Pulsar as well. But the thing which creates the totem sound is the ability to use an LFO or Pulsar to modulate the GATE of an envelope, so you use the LFO or Pulsar rates to trigger the envelope, and that creates the Chuga-chuga Totem sound. This idea came from my years with an ARP Odysee in college
Theres also the unique ARP and SEQ system in which you use the LFO as a unique arpegiator that is not dependent on what chords you hold down, but on the LFO waveform, rate, and amount controls that goes to pitch on the mod matrix. You can create some very wild algorithmic style sequences and arps with this . On the factory patches, most of the SEQ stuff has a SEQ patch on the bottom part of the keyboard, with a lead or pad sound on the upper keyboard so you can do a performance. M42 is really geared to live performance, and many have done this.

Tim,
I would really like to have a talk with you, one on one (well, internet wise or phone wise) and pick your M42 brain. I want to learn every nuance of the M42 so Spiral and other products I plan on releasing (as well as helping others with their presets) will be state-of-the-preset-design-art.
You have so much to teach and I have still so much to learn. I know you are very busy, but maybe on a croissant break (he he he) you and I can converse?
Feel free to PM or email me any time you wish.
