I did'nt want to post this in that "other" FreeAmp
Preset thread because A) I'm not interested in competitions
and B) I could give a Rat's Patoot about trying to emulate
someone else's idea of what good tone should be. In any
case, I made this little patch for the guitar synth last
night. It can be downloaded here:

the "other" thread isnt about what SOMEONES idea of good tone should be. Its showing a deficiency in the tone of freeamp.

and its not really a "competition"...

but thanks for the guitar synth patch, one of the good features of freeamp indeed!

Then why is it called: FreeAmp 2 Authentic Amp Preset Contest??

Hrmn...I've always been under the assumption that the term "contest" implies a "competition". Apparently my grasp of
English is limited. Further, in my mind, the term "Authentic Amp" implies the attempt to perfectly recreate the tone of an existing hardware amp. A hardware amp IS SOMEONE'S
idea of what good tone is.

I'm not interested in recreating the tone of my '56 Fender Vibrolux....any such attempt is invariably frustrating and dissapointing. I'm much more interested in FA2's own unique sounds....which BTW I'm quite happy with. As Grymjack pointed out Joe is oldschool and FA2 reflects that tonal sensibility....thank god!

I don't percieve FA2's inability to nail Kerry King, Dimebag, Mark Morton or Yngwie tones a deficiency. It was'nt designed to do that.

I don't like Mesa's or Randall's any other
ultra high gain amps for that matter. But just
because I dislike their tone does'nt make them
"deficient". They are quite good at what they
do...as is FA2!!

i wasnt looking for a metal tone actually, initially. I was talking about the muddiness inherent to ANY tone in freeamp2.

That would be a deficiency.

As i mentioned, this would affect all sorts of genres of tone, blues, rock, hard rock, metal, funk, etc... muddiness is muddiness no matter what genre it is.

I am not wishing it to sound JUST like any amp, i just want a GOOD sound, and i feel the sound is constrained, and not open at all... I can give a rats arse what amp sounds like what. I dont think -- if this doesnt sound like a 66 bassman then forget it. I just want to rock out -- and also have some nice effects.

oldskool, nuskool, pish posh. Crap is crap. And although i have heard some good tones from freeamp, for the most part, i still think it lacks definition and clarity.

Although it has ALOT of character and responsiveness.

but those two without the other two arent worth it, even for free.

I dont wish this to go on ad nauseum (thereby derailing your very well meaning thread), so please just try and understand where im coming from.

No, that would be your opinion. For it to be an actual
deficiency, the vast majority would have to agree that
it sucks...i.e. Ashley Simpson. You have your opionion
and I respect it. I simply don't agree with it.

Getting ready to "FreeAmp" my balalaika....

Post

I tried loading both of these preset files in FreeAmp2 - both resulted in memory errors. My FreeAmp2.dll is dated July 6. Myhost is the latest beta of energyXT.

Well, they load just fine here in Chainer. I don't know if your
problem is due to your PC, Energy or the fact that you are
using Beta2 instead of Beta3. I suggest you dld and try
the latest beta...it's dated July 10.

I guess it's now a moot point, as the release version of freeamp2 is out, as of this morning.
