Stupid question about the library

Just got Rhino but I don't get the library - if I click under any category there's nothing there. Obviously I realise anything new I make I'd have to assign to a category but don't the factory banks and official banks at least come pre sorted or is there a way to build a database automatically (like with Kontakt 2)? If I have to assign every single patch myself I can't see the point of it.

The whole point is that you can arrange them any way you want-your way. Just drag and drop.aMUSEd wrote:If I have to assign every single patch myself I can't see the point of it.

When I had first gotten Rhino, I thought the same thing. But I have to say that of all the synths I own, Rhino has really benefitted from 3rd party patch banks, mostly by Dan Mauer. In that light, when I load a bank (aren't most people like this?), I go through the presets and find a certain percentage that really do it for me, and a certain percentage that I probably won't use.
At that point, I drag the patches that really catch my ear into appropriate categories in the library (including some categories I've added). After that, I usually pick the likely candidates right from the library - I don't have to go around looking for a particular patch in a bank somewhere (or go through the bother of saving individual patches every time). But I still have the complete banks, in case I need to slum through them again, looking for something 'different'.
In a way, it is just an easy way to have a custom "default" bank, as I have to do in so many other VSTs. But it isn't limited, and could grow according to my needs, and the patches are already categorized without having to name them a certain way, or come up with a custom directory structure.
Just my take on it, but I find it so useable I wish *all* the instruments had something like this!

aMUSEd - I'm thinking the same thing here. It'd be nice if all the stock presets + Daniel's stuff where already sorted into a library at the start. Don't know how library management works at this time but If ppl preferred to work as envoy and parky maybe have an option where they can start with the empty library as is now.
For me, I'd prefer things sorted from the start, so when I'm looking for a bass for instance, I don't have to wade through all the presets - and think about it, creating your own library requires this type of weeding from you for every type sound you're after - that seems like alot of time to me.
It'd be better IMO, to have a user favorites section, along with the stock presets already sorted.

I did purchase Rhino 2 . . .
I had to edit this because now I feel really stupid about the 1st part of this reply. I now know why everything is GREYED out in the Library upon first buying Rhino2. There's nothing actually in it. It starts out with EMPTY CATEGORIES. That is all that they are. You have to DRAG AND DROP from the BANK pane to the LIBRARY pane and THEN you have something in the Library. Assuming you drag and drop into categories you made or they supplied, you can now dial up your favorite or organized presets - but they are not done for you when you buy it or download the demo. You have to do the work.
I don't think this yet exists in Rhino2, but Rhino2 needs a preset search - specifically for the LIBRARY - so that you can find that brass or string sound or anything made by Tim Conrardy!
THIS is what we need!!!

Will the library load a preset from any of the banks, even if you are in the default bank ?? That would be awesome !

If I understand you correctly, sure. Once you've added presets from various banks to the library, all you do is select them *from* the library. The patch loads automatically. I really tend to think of it (though it really isn't implemented this way) that the library is a large super-bank of all my favorite presets, always available. The main bank window is simply there to occasionally load a new bank to look for something.AzureCrystal wrote:Will the library load a preset from any of the banks, even if you are in the default bank ?? I don't know how it is with everyone else, but when I purchase or collect a new bank of presets, and I go through and audition them, I have a pretty darn good idea of which sounds are going to fit my use, and a pretty good idea of which ones I'll never visit again. So if I spend a little time with a bank, I just take the most likely candidates and add them to the library in basic categories. When I sit down to do some writing, I don't have to troll through a bunch of banks, or do any kind of search. All my likely candidates are right there in the library, in handy categories.
I really like this feature. A lot.
