Hello everyone,

I am struggling a bit trying to get the compression right for the linked beat I have made with drum samples. After listing to a few different compressors I thought Marquis 1.4 was going to be the best one.

The world of compression is a bit heavy... I thought I had it, but next thing I can't hear the difference any more! Can anyone (esp the brilliant bmanic who is such a wealth of knowledge on Marquis compression!) comment on my first attempt?

Here's my opinion:

- The Kick sounded really bad without switching to Linear Phase Mode, it sounded hollow and weak. Anyone agree?

- I am trying to make it pump, so have timed the release to the BPM and added a few dB to the key filter where the kick lives (hopefully to make it react to the kick strikes more than anything else). Do people think this is a good approach, any better settings?

- It's hitting 3-4 dB compression when working. I think this is enougth. 10.1 ms attack, 526 ms release.

- Force setting just made it distort in a bad way.

- T3/Forward/Clean mode seemed good for the job!

I think I am hearing the compressed version sounding more 'together/glued' more 'punchy' and more rhythmic. I just want it to kick arse on the dance floor and have 'like a record' sound.

If anyone would like to comment on my settings, or even improve on them and post any others here then FANTASTIC.

(first attempt at posting links so hope ok)

All the best,

David

Nope! That was what surprised me in thermals request; he selected the tool before selecting the target. It is impossible to help without knowing what he is going for; I tried to show a quite different example :)

Oh here are some more 8)

Thanks for the samples, I do like some of them.... only thing is I don't have access to this comp. If you care to share the attack/release/amount of gain reduction and other parameters of your samples that would be very educational!

Regarding the sound I am looking for, I was maybe not detailed in the original post. Lets say,

Hard, Punchy, Pumping, Solid. Overall mainly glued together with a nice rhythmic pumping and an overall dance floor friendly feel.

THANKS!

No, I would not mind - if I had them ;) I was just putting something together to help thermal define what he was looking for. I did not save it. Preset 4 is made with a tube-amp algorithm under develelopment, no other plug-ins are used here. The other examples uses GPP-1, GXX-1 and GEQ-7 (to filter subs). Classic Reverb are used as well on Loop5 and Classic Auto-filter on Loop1 and Loop5.

Do i understand right there is a new product in development, or is it an existing product which gets updated with a tube-amp algorithm? Anything more you can tell about it? ;)

Can we already pre-order? Will there be a group buy?

Nothing has been decided for this algorithm. It was developed a while back as a proof of concept and then down-prioritised for other work. I just decided to try it on his drum-loop and it works well, I aggree :)

No and No

Hi thermal,

Marquis compressor is very versatile but i agree with torben that it might not be wise to select the tool(s) first. As i am on holidays and have no access to the internet, except this mobile phone that i'm writing on, i can't take a listen to the loop. :(
Pumping compression can be kind of an illusion by ducking some other sustained element during the kick. ..duh, running out out of..

.. space in this silly nokia notepad. Anyways, i recommend you try parallel compression too, setting the dry/wet knob to something like 40/60 and then do some deep compression of the loop, meaning -30 or more threshold, 2:1 or less ratio, open up the attack to something like 30ms or more and long release that you tweak by ear to the rythm you want. All this in mode t3.

Cheers!
