I've put this in hosts just as it was the least innappropriate place, but I'm not really looking for something that will host plugins internally but a sequencer with sophisticated midi editing that I can use to drive Scope and Hardware synths as well as soft synths hosted in an ASIO app - so I want something that doesn't use ASIO at all - no audio - just midi - but that offers a greater degree of control, phrasing, maybe notation, than most ASIO hosts seem to. I'm not looking for toy "band in a box" type stuff that "composes" music but a real musical tool but features like control over harmonic structure would be useful.

Afaik band in a box does what you want. Simply don't use its composition helpers and enter your notes by hand.

I had some fun years ago with partly generated songs: Use a style as starting point and apply your own ideas. Export the midi stuff to orion for example and blow up the sound ...

Why not use EnergyXT and forget about its audio capabilities? A pure (and very good) MIDI seq is Jammer Pro, but it comes with BIAB options like styles etc. Well, no need to use these. But I'd say EXT would be the best (and least expensive) choice at the moment. There are a lot of excellent MIDI plugins especially made for it, etc.

Yes but can you run eXT without ASIO? It doesn't seem to have an option for "none" in setup

In Ext's system setup midi/audio inputs/outputs you can check/uncheck as you wish... even as it chooses ASIO ( when installed; the free ASIO4ALL in my case) as its basic setup. Uncheck all audio and simply choose your MIDI output(s), I'd say.

You don't need ASIO to run it.

i figure you're at luxury to look for a feature-rich product w/o budget considerations. if not, i have logic 4 'fun' archived - this has at least 16 tracks that have high resolution sequencing, but lacks 'power transform' functions like humanisation.

You could try to find Yamaha XGworks. I used to have this before my house was broken into, I don't know if it's still available but, AFAIK, would do what you want.

Tried Reaktor (assuming you own it IIRC) ?
It's running on other drivers than ASIO as well, so maybe if you have a low profile onboard soundcard as well (maybe even if not) this will reserve the ASIO driver for the other application.

EDIT: Anything that runs on other drivers than ASIO (i.e. DX, MME) should do actually, if offering the midi functionalities

Yes that looks interesting - though Firefox won't load their shop page so I can't see how much it costs.

I've also found something called Onyx Arranger - anyone used that? Looks quite powerful.

I forgot about that - doesn't it also have an editor for the VL built into it or something?

Yes it did. The version I had was ver.3 which didn't work on Window 2000 (or XP for that matter, but I was running 2000 back then) if I recall, but I remember the version 4 did.

I've only found the software still available from Yamaha Japan for some reason, and I'm affraid my Japanese is a bit lacking, but here's the page anyway: http://www.yamaha.co.jp/product/syndtm/p/soft/xgwv4w/

This reminded me how piss poor current crop of sequencers are, I mean XGworks is ooold and yet was better than what's offered today in many ways. I think sequencer programing is following an inverse evolutionary curve, they're not evoluting, they're devoluting...
