I've had Sonar 5 PE sitting on my shelf for some time now. I was trying to get into it but it seems like there is always some kind of problem with the VST support and the midi editing sucks. Also, the interface and gui just did seem to flow well. Probably becuase I used Cubase SX3 for the past year.

Anyway, some of the effects work in Cubase, like the Sontilus ones... Also perfect space, but not the lexicon reverb or the V-Vocal. Is there some way to get them to work in another host. It just sucks to have Sonar 5 PE sit on the shelf after shelling out a good chunk of change for it and Cakewalk does not allow sale of it(which is stupid).

The big thing would being able to use the Pantheon and V-Vocal, I noticed they have .dll files but just won't start up in Cubase. I guess if nothing works out I'd probably get more satisfaction out of Sonar if I just burned the box and manual and smashed the CD. Thanks in advance.

Some (most?) of the effects in Sonar 5PE are DX effects - not VST. I don't know if Cubase will support them.

In addition, some (I believe the Lexicon Pantheon reverb in particular) are host-locked - they are programmed to not work with other hosts.

If you're really that unhappy with Sonar 5PE, either give it to a needy musician or - as you suggested - use it to gain satisfaction.

Actually, with their license agreement, you arn't even allowed to give it away.

Technically this is true.

In practice, it has been given away in the past. Heck, it's even been sold in the past. But the buyer isn't entitled to any support, and IIRC the buyer won't even get a discount on upgrading since it's registered to the seller.

LOL!!! It would have to be some kind of James Bond setup. Secret Agent stuff for me to get it to you. There would be all kinds of Cakewalk henchmen standing in my way.

I did notice people sell them on eBay "as is" and don't even bother to list in their auctions that the person that gets it won't qualify for upgrades or tech support.

monkeymanx in answering your question, I know for sure that Lexicon is definitely host locked and I am almost 100 % sure that the V-Vocal is too.

What I'd do if I were you (being a Cubase user myself) is use Sonar for editing your vocal tracks (Similar to meldoyne) and then import into Cubase since Cubase has no vocal correction.

I completely agree with what you dislike about Sonar, Cubase may have a dongle but at least it can be sold ... not that you'd ever want to since it's the best host out there (in my opinion)

Yea... That may have to be the route I go. I just hate having to import and export tracks. I noticed people saying you could use eXT within Sonar and also that would be used to host your VSTi's. That may clear up some of the problems I have with Sonar. I like the package Sonar comes with much better than Cubase. I like the interface and compatibility with Cubase though. My work just flows in Cubase. I'll try eXT maybe though and see if it works out.

Can I ask, what sorta problems have you had with VST in Sonar ? When I demoed it the wrapped actually worked pretty well.

Have you tried Directizer (www.tonewise.com i think)

Yea I tried Directizer in Sonar also. Mainly with DFHS and I suppose it would be the same with Jamstix... Instead of say, having the kick drum track actually be assigned to the kick output, kick will be on the same track as snare top or something like that... I had to get some template that routed it out to busses and seperated it. It was just so messy.

I also really hated the midi editor it came with. The one in Cubase is just so much easier to use.

I seem to remember some massive argument here because the cakewalk no-sale license agreement is not valid in the EU or Uk or something, so it is actually legal to sell it but you can't register it.

Cubase supports them just fine, and they appear in Cubase under DirectX section. That drives me nuts because I like to sort my effects types. What's not supported is DirectX instruments. My favorite delay plug-in is a DirectX plugin and I use it all the time in Cubase.
