Mmh... I have not found a usage for the GPP by now, because I always own MPL and GUP. As I understand its more like a soft-limiter?
Btw. the Tube-Overdrive sounds nice

Little tips for use of GPP1...

- GPP1 is the best compressor I've heard on vocals, deals with quick attacks beautifully and the fact that it's got a soft knee feature means you don't have to lower the threshold as much to get a stable vocal sound i.e. less breathing
- Very nice to use as a glue compressor on the master, set the knee to very soft and only compress a little.
- GPP1 is great to use when smashing drums a little, helps you get the drum buss to sound a lot more tight and glued ... the soft knee isn't quite as useful with this, but the Classic mode is

I would probably say that the GPP1 is the most used compressor I have

followed by Marquis Compressor.

I think, I must try GPP again

As a glue on the drumbus I always used the GUP (Golden Unipressor) before.

4 (tube overdrive) is popular I see

GPP-1 is a soft limiter, but if the knee is very soft it works fine as a compressor on instruments where you want minimum attack time anyway.

Torben - I like the way GPP-1 handles transients also. Do you think it might be possible to make a Peak-Pusher also so that it would push transients up in gain a little higher. I suppose technically you could reverse the detector output on Peak-Presser(haha - says I!) or whatever magic the dsp needs to do that. I wonder if that would sound good on stuff thats had transients suppressed - like tapes. Any thoughts? Thanks.

That would be a upward expander like the one offered in GCO-1

OK thanks Torben - I'll check it out since I have that one too! In an earlier investigation though I got the impression the GPP knew a little something extra about transients that other processors didn't. I think if I set GCO to release faster then maybe it would look closer to GPP - I was looking at waveforms instead of listening - could be the problem...

the mix is off in the initial loop. mainly the snare is too loud and pokey. also for me the kik is boomy and has little punch, and the hats have no air above 10k, so sound quite lofi. but the last 2 are taste really (allbeit shared by the majority).

i would reach straight for a saturator and eq if i didnt have access to original samples. if it had to be a comp, then attack 0 or as close as, v quick release, and high ratio. squish that snare transient.

- I am trying to make it pump, so have timed the release to the BPM and added a few dB to the key filter where the kick lives (hopefully to make it react to the kick strikes more than anything else). Do people think this is a good approach, any better settings?

adding more db to the kick in the side chain will make comp react more to it but the kick will get squished far more too. also setting release time by bpm can be meaningless since they have such different slopes, except to make sure comp cycle finishes before next transient.

personally i find the sx compressor great when it comes to pumping.

Martian, I agree the mix is not 100% correct on the initial loop. I have not started to eq or produce the drums yet, just working out my compression settings for now. Not sure I agree the snare is too 'pokey'... will try your suggestion of squashing it.
