Absolutely agree- however that is true of nearly ALL software. You own license to use; not the software itself...it is more like a rental.

The Abes have a vision and they are sticking to it. It is a great ride, but it is hard for me to imagine someone investing in this as it hits close to a thousand dollars in the next couple years, compared to what you get in Sonar or Logic.

not sure if I agree there about the thousand dollars in investment... I don't think I'm "missing" anything that Logic, Cubase or Sonar have by using Live (with eXT... )
in fact, there may be some things much more easily managed in Live than the others!
yes, there are some features that even dissappeared once the Abes' vision shifted toward incorporating more DAW while trying to maintain LIVE as a performance tool (ie- my most missed feature from 3: hot key quantize resolutions...gone in V4 to present...just one example...) but there are so many more features that are head and shoulders more logical for my work flow (ie- *most* of the aspects of MIDI clip management) than with the other big dogs out there that I'm happy on the Live path... all depends on your workflow I guess... While there are some things I would have expected by now (especially in this version- like automation curves or even automation clips for sends; both mentioned in this thread previously...) I have no doubt that I'll find new and useful things not mentioned in the changes so far...

Live 6 still doesn't allow vsts when rewired. According to some comments on the forum this isn't actually possible with *any* rewire slave, although I can't see any reason off the top of my head why this would be true.

I think this works.
This is how i tested it. started up live 5, then live 6 in rewire slave mode..
Vst's and au's work..

Dunno if that would be any different from being slaved to protools or such..

Some users are complaining not enough attention was given to arrange. Others are saying they want more DJ features... and so on...

Seems to me a lot of people second-guessed what would/should beincluded in Live 6 and are now suprised to see that Ableton had their own ideas. But some of the new stuff, like the Racks, multiple mapping, deep freeze, etc - is going to lead to new creative possibilities and as such we all need time to play with it and THEN decide whether we like it or not.

Also, reading through the Ableton forum, especially posts from Robert Henke and some of the alpha testers, there are many more smaller features than have been mentioned on the website.

Like this gem - This is a seriously nice feature!

Think about this, how much coud this simplify and speed up editing of anykind of music ! Or how could this help doing radio features / commercials.

The Racks seem to be so powerful from what Robert said in response to my question... I don't now see much need for buying the sAmpler at all...

I don't personally use either... but I believe that my existing sampler (NN-XT) is capable of both those if I ever had the need.

Having said that I may eventually get the Sampler (for example if there is a bundle deal at some point - that's what finally tipped me into buying Operator). Ultimately I'm a bit of an Ableton junkie

I love Live to death. It is a wonderful scratchpad, beat creator, and synth workstation with some advanced features, but I am still going to need Sonar for my complete tracks.

This was my thinking when I got Sonar 5 last year. However...

...what I have actually found (and am finally ready to admit!!) is that I have not completed a single track in Sonar, except for simple audio recordings/mixing. Whenever I try to create new music using Sonar I find I get bogged down very quickly and fail to move far beyond the starting post.

Live 5 is a real contrast to this - I find it so inspiring and tracks just fall out! For me personally I love the Arrangement View as well - the automation for example - though not curved like Sonar's - is way easier for me to use because graphically seeing one parameter clearly in a bright colour is better than seeing a jumble of pastel shades simultaneously. (Just one example). I like it too that you can draw your tempo map properly in line with the Arrangment, rather than in a seperate window which, even when "tabbed", does not properly line up with the Arrangment in Sonar (okay, that was another example then!).

So for me personally Live really is a complete end-to-end solution for composing AND producing a finished track. Obviously it's very nice to be able to use Sonar's effects within Live though .

I am on a Mac so for hosts I have less choices. Tried DP, Cubase, PT... didn't like them... too complex and uninviting... Got into Tracktion for a while cause I like the basic UI design, but I do a lot of midi and I realized I was spending far too much time on workarounds and I don't think the philosophy of it matches what I want or where I am going.. I had had Live for a while, but only dabbled in it. Then a couple months ago I really started digging into Live and it just suits me. I have fun, it is very creative and truly a musicians tool. I am fairly sure that with Live 6, it will be the only host I use. For creative studio stuff, Live is fresh and capable and for performance, it is just better than anything else.

I was planning on it, but now I may not bother upgrading Tracktion at all. I like the fact that people involved with the development of Live post music and that there is a real innovative creative feeling in the Ableton forum and that they talk more openly about the software and their visions for it, and of course the public beta is great.

It has taken me about a year to find the tools I want. Made a few purchases that I don't need, and headed down a few culdesacs.

I own Kontakt, but I am going to look at the new Live Sampler. The easy drag-n-drop is a big draw. Record something and drag the clip right into Sampler is much better than Kontakt.

I promised I would post when I got definitive word from Ableton regarding the rewire issue. Just got an email and as I feared the rewire improvement only applies to Ableton instruments not to 3rd party VSTi's. Consequently, I can't use Live as a rewire slave very effectively since my interest is to use Live for tracking/composition and Cubase for final mix/mastering. (The new deep freeze and flattening should help some.)

That said, I still love live as my main composition DAW and I am looking forward to the new creative possibilities in Live 6. Just have to wait a little longer for perfection.

Interesting quote from Robert Henke on the arrange view:

Making the arranger better is a top priority on our internal list, but at the same time it is one of the most demanding and challanging things to change. Once we will adress it, we will make sure it works the way you want it, inlcuding crossfades, key commands, cursor / arrow navigation, better handling of automation data / clip envelopes / recording of MIDI CC in tracks and clips and all the other details you could come up with. But this will eat up a lot of our resources. It does not make sense to do too much little changes here without adressing the big topics. If we had done this for Live 6 then there were no multi CPU support.
And if we were releasing Live 6 without multicore support I would not want to read the forum now....

Live is not over. Things will come.....( and i am sure for Live 10 the list will be even bigger. The more you do, the more ideas you get )

Sounds like the dual-core support did turn out to be a big project and probably made it impossible for them to get to some of the other things that needed work. Maybe Live 7 will be the version where it really all comes together?

I have both and they make a great combo, FL6 will drop into live as a vst and you can use it for some of my favorite things like creating chords or using the random function to find some unique phrasing.

I have been using Live for 3 years and find it allot easier to sit down and complete a song with. FL6 is still kind of new to me so I've yet to complete a tune. But I love the way it sounds!!

I say..use both!
