Are there any softsynths that have this? Been kind of interested to see what kind of timbres I could get out of something like that.

sorry, would cross mod be the same as fm, one osc modifying another?

I thought cross modulation should be:
osc A modulates osc B
osc B modulates osc A

If you mean the audio output of osc1 modulates the frequency of osc2, the oddity can do that (through the S/H mixer), and the timewarp2600 as well. It can give some cranking biting kind of sounds on those arp synths.

The SC Prophet600 emulation by EFM/TomG (www.ele4music.com) has a wicked poly-mod. Gives interesting texture to the sound. Maybe that's what you mean?

If you mean what I think you do, then there's quite a few that offer either RM or FM cross modulation between osc's. I've gotten into trying to use these for help layering bass sounds. Here's a couple of freebies I've found lately:

MVXSynths ANX and MVX3
K77FREE KXOmni600-U3 - pretty big synth
B. Serrano CosmosXT, HadesXT, and Pulsar 4 - kind of underrated
illoyd ilosynth

Yes, that's what I had in mind. I was just reading about someone waxing poetic about the Jupiter 8 and the sounds you could get from it's cross mod, and I couldn't think of any synths that advertised anything like this.

I actually found a little video clip of it in action from a roland v-synth video. Fast forward to about halfway through:

Lizard can do cross mod (both oscillators modulating each other) makes it quite hard to tame though.

Pro53 has extensive cross modulation section except they label it Poly Mod, its this section of the synth that enables you to lift the sound out of the also ran catagory

As someone rightly pointed out, the Prophet 5 has a polymod section where oscillator B can be used to modulate the frequency of oscillator A.
The term cross modulation is used in the Jupiter 8 for the same thing. It does not mean that both oscillators can modulate each others frequency at the same time.

I know that some hardware synths called it "cross modulation", but I don't get what is cross about it nor in what way it is different from regular FM. For me, cross modulation is exactly that. Cross I mean

But different people mean different things when they say cross modulation, mainly because some mean the basic kind of FM that can be found in some hardware synths. Not their fault that those manufacturers gave it a stupid name

That said, I think cross modulation (where two oscillators modulates each other) can be great fun and easily create evolving textures / noises

Okay... I watched that video, and the one synth I listed that could come pretty close to getting that sound is KX77FREE. It can sound very timid and thin like a regular synth, but you can VERY easily start getting that harsh squelching sounds that video has by playing around with the phase distortion. It takes a while to learn it though. So if you're patient enough...

Any vst's out there that have a cross-mod option for oscs?
