Hello there ,
C
an you recommend some good sfx CD's .I'm looking for quality futuristic sounds that you would associate with films like the matrix and other sci-fi films. You know all the computer sounds, laser guns, space explosions reverbs and so on.

I generally find that in most collections I own, the sci-fi is largly retro 60's sounding (think Moogs and Arp2600's - Ben Burtt uses the Arp substantially in all his films), the stuff you expect to hear in Dr Who etc. Decent contemporary sci-fi effects are hard to find - the best bet is www.sounddogs.com, where you can download individual fx (essentially an iTunes music store for sfx) - also films like Star Wars used a "found sound" analogy, in that you take existing sounds (telephone cables) and manipulate them to create futuristic sounds (stormtrooper lasers).

The Matrix had a very strong steampunk theme through it, so maybe get samples of large machinery, or even better are small servo motors pitched down. Dane Davis (sound designer on Matrix) also makes good use of doppler and is a big fan of the GRM Tools FX. There are interviews with him and others @ http://www.filmsound.org/

You can also join various Yahoo Groups to discuss available discs (in terms of VST collections, I strongly recommend USB X-Treme FX), there is also a game audio forum - http://www.gameaudioforum.com

Hope this helps.

Oh and this one; but I haven't tried it - maybe someone could comment on how good it is for sci-fi?

I've also done a lot of damage in Sonik Synth 2 for sci fi effects.
In general I take lots of real-world sounds and run them through ring modulators, odd filters plugins, distortions, anything you can find that processes your sounds in weird ways. That's what's so great about a database like KVR's.
Go on Freesound and grab a bird tweeting sample, run it through the effects above and I assure you it will start to sounds like R2D2 fast!

i heartily recommend X-Treme FX, even comes with a few Hollywood Edge sfx banks which are really top-notch - sfx, it covers the bases pretty well, laser blasts, engines cars - though you often find as the effects are burned on (why they burn the fx/reverbs on, when X-Treme FX ships with it's FX engine is quite odd), though they are quite tasteful and not like the cheesy BBC library FX treatments. It really excels in the ambience/atmosphere department though, creating creepy sci-fi stuff with these is real fun.

As Mr.Tunes says - real-world sounds are the best, X-Treme ships with quite a lot of field-recorded/foley stuff to which you can manipulate to your hearts content. I recommend looking up interviews with Ben Burtt (Star Wars) for robot stuff, and Gary Rydstrom (Jurassic Park/Hulk) for monster sounds - like I said before, http://www.filmsound.org/ is a great resource for this.

Tee boy, sounds great. Are these sounds from an upcoming library you will be releasing?

Post

You bet your arse they are my good man

Will be sure to keep you posted as an when. The contracts are sorted, so it shouldnt be too long with a bit of luck. Its a cool library though, loads of movie style ambiences and fx. Quite a few of which are sci fi.

Great. Well send me a PM or something when it's available but i'm sure i'll see the press release here right? Do you have an estimation of how much it will cost?

Surprisingly I have absolutely no idea! Its pretty much out of my hands, so I have little to add.

But what I can tell you it is that it should be good for those wanting seriously cool fx and ambient sounds that are pretty much ready to go out of the box. There are no multisamples or anything like that, just single sounds.

Its like of a bit like the Distorted Reality concept, but sonically very different.

I'll let you have any info on the release / price / format as soon as I know (though its looking as though it will be a VST for starters, should be cool). Hopefully this will be sooner rather than later!
