poco models the 1176 and that's pretty much it. They haven't the same design paradigm as UAD-1 it seems, and in my mind they aren't really competing of the same space. TC=top notch reverbs, UAD=top notch emulations... different strenghts really.

Sure both of them have an assortment of similar bread & butter boredom FX as well. No thanks.

Which is still better than the double latency you get from the UAD-1 (ie if your host is 6ms, with the UAD-1, its' 12ms.)
Yeah, but your host compensates for the UAD doesn't it? It's just that I haven't ever used anything Firewire (or for that matter USB either...at least not for direct audio source) so I really have no idea whether hosts can compensate for it.

(The UAD does get compensated for in the host doesn't it? I bloody hope so, because the EMT plate is the main reason I want one, although for sure I'll use various other plugins too). For mastering, obviously there's no issue, but I'd sure want to do some tracking too.

And I agree with Kingston re the TC/UAD thing. To my mind, TC is a card you'd buy initially for the reverb (if you like TC reverb) with some dull stuff, and the occasional pearl thrown in (that Sony Inflator thingy is on the TC platform innit? Sounds good apart from the fact it's from those bandits Sony...wouldn't ever touch them with a bargepole ever again)...but it always speaks to me of digital, clean and precision. That Filtrator that they used to have in the Native Pack...that's another good one that was carried over to the card, I think, although it's characterful, it's still clean - not what I'd call dirty. Quality for sure, but of a more "today-ish" vibe.
UAD mostly go for emulations of old and quirky gear with a definite "yesterday" feel, although they do have some precision and clean plugins.

If I liked TC reverb, I could certainly see room in my PC for both a UAD and a TC. Unfortunately, TC reverb does nothing for me, and the other good plugins don't, for me, warrant the price of the whole thing.

No...what I want, what I really really want...is a UAD card bristling with plugins, and a brand new Lexicon PCM-X card that they really want to release soon, but just don't realise it yet. :?

Not a bad thought, but only if it does the L960 thing. IK CSR really did it for me when it comes to the whole PCM-90/91 sound. It's so damn near already I just don't care for further nitpicking.

About the UAD latency... I read in another post that each UAD plugin you add to a project adds further latency. So if you end up using say, 5 eq, 5 comp and 1 verb plugin, suddenly your latency is 30ms! (I have no clue the actual number, just threw that out there.)

Any truth to this?

No, total bullshit. :)

It only works that way if you run them in series. two UAD-1 plugins on the same channel (or on a bus where the channel is routed) will double the normal UAD-1 latency. If you just use one plug in each channel, basically in parallel, this is not a problem.

In fact it's not a problem even in series since hosts will generally automatically compensate all the latency. It's only a problem on realtime audio inputs, which obviously can't be compensated since hosts can't see in the future.
