Right, and the sophisticated user who's short on CPU power is going to automate a bypass during those passages, right? I know I would.

The "constant CPU" would not hold when it comes to synths for instance (like having all the polyphonic voices active and processing even when they're not playing anything).
Agreed Stefan. Though, I considered making Poly constant load... she fluctates. Still, I feel kind of bad that the oscillators aren't continuing to run silently (or almost silently due to bleed and crosstalk) like a real world synth. And am even considering some code to bring them back in the phase they should be, after they've been silent.

Just my 2c, now you can resume the quarrelling :)

edit: and, oh, oscillators modulating filters (and other things) are fun :)
Thank you. Everyone but tony knows that apparently. Note that he hasn't conceded that point yet either.

Now the guy who thinks stuff should run on Win9x (see TSV's thread) wants everyone to have SSE.
Yes, why not? You can support EVERYTHING, no?
I've written 3DNow code and I don't expect everyone to have an AMD neither.
But I've also posted in these forums a quick way to avoid denormalization using integer processing. Here, here it is again:

EAX=32bit float buffer pointer
EDX=length
Den_Thres is your tiny number threshold
--
PUSH ESI
PUSH EDI
PUSH EBX

MOV ECX,EDX
LEA EDI,[EAX+4*ECX]
NEG ECX
MOV EDX,Den_Thres
SHL EDX,1
XOR ESI,ESI

@Loop:
MOV EAX,[EDI+4*ECX]
LEA EBX,[EAX*2]
CMP EBX,EDX
CMOVB EAX,ESI
MOV [EDI+4*ECX],EAX

INC ECX
JNZ @Loop

POP EBX
POP EDI
POP ESI

(requires a pentium pro for the CMOVB, though)

The lie is that it takes 15% of your CPU to process stereo (and yes, if it was a mono sawtooth, then half that again.) If you bothered to USE IT CORRECTLY, it would take hardly any.
Well, I just fired it up. sorry if that's not using it correctly.

How would you like it if I dug into a critique of FLStudio and posted results from intentionally misusing it and ignoring features that would hacve helped me?
FL is pretty popular so you can imagine this is done a lot already.

Do they like that you're doing exactly that to other companies? Do you think you're losing FLStudio sales to SCAMP customers
oh plz spare me this. I even saw you talking about your lawyer if someone ever stole your knob bitmaps. I mean come on..
I've seen lots of FL-based winamp skins, FL-ripped graphics in several places and I find it more flattering than annoying.

If someone wants to steal my LOOK, that's fine -- after all, I'm just stealing the look of real-world controls that I've seen, though there are many different manufacturers of roosterhead knobs, toggle switches, etc, so I don't feel I've violated anyone's copyright or trademark.

But if someone wants to extract the binary resources out of my software to reuse in their own software, it's lawyer time, sorry (and I'm not even American!) I didn't spend 3 weeks building interface elements just to have somebody spend 3 minutes sucking the resource out of my .dll to use in their own product. (Though I'd consider licensing them for a reasonable fee if anyone was interested, just contact me.)

The point was, in the original context, was that someone pointed out that some people think a good reason to bake the background image into the knob is to protect it from being re-used by others.

Now, you don't like me tony, that much is clear. At this point, I don't like you either. But that you're making it your personal mission in life to follow me around the board, insulting me and misinterpreting my comments, out of context -- this is more than just a little offensive. You're accusing me of a lot of things that I just plain did not say. And attacking my product with flat out lies. You really need to watch it.

I think it's better if the user doesn't have to bother with this, since it can be handled automatically, which is less of a hassle for the user. That said, I don't think it's THAT much of an issue either.

sorry, AQ -- you just seem totally pissed off, and you are not making much sense.

as a user (and not a developer), i for one do not want my plugins using CPU when they are not in use. I love the way that FLstudio handles this. And there are SEVERAL times where this has come in handy on my modest, 4 year old computer.

as far as automating it, jeez, who the heck wants to bother with that?

sorry, smart disable all the way, baby.

or did you ask him to join this thread?

Hey Alison Hughes! How I've missed you. (Note the way that's worded.)

I TOOK this thread out of another thread, in the hopes of returning that thread to it's original topic.

tony started the "war" with his filter mod denial comments. The audacity of which speaks for itself I think. I'm just trying to do everyone else the favour of taking it in here, instead of in all the other nice people's threads.

As for you, we've been over this, and I think you've already been officially warned against trolling in my threads, but we can go there again if you push it. By the way, still want to claim that I couldn't program anything if I tried, or have you grown up any in the last 9 months?

right.

but fact is, who the hell wants to take that extra step when the cpu can do it for you at an extremely negligable price?

I know i dont want to bother with it...
automating bypasses?

pfffff

sorry, doesnt work in my flow.

+1 for major social skills.

hope your products are doing well.

I asked him to join me here, BECAUSE he's following me. What's so hard to understand "about taking it outside?"

And your vote is noted. Thanks. I'll consider it in the future. True, it wouldn't add a LOT of extra CPU, but to me every line counts. (I have to check the input AND the output though as the filter could still be ringing... or self-oscillating. So then I have to check the input, the output, and the position of the resonance control... see how these "features" rammify?)

What do you folks DO with the extra power you get during the silent bits, anyway? "Hey look, there's a point in the song where CPU drops to 80% I better add something there!" Sorry... but to me its a use it, or don't decision. But we all work in different ways and I'll see what I can do.

Post

this ISNT asking you to join you outside.

go to PM and see what happens.

that would be taking it outside.

if you havent noticed, you are still in public ;)

EDIT:

what you did is like being in a pub, getting into a fight, someone asking you to take it outside so you go back to where people are playing pool instead.

Your logic is completely flawed. I dont nessecarily have to fill up less cpu spaces with other stuff simply for that fact. But what if I have a passage that uses a hi-resource plugin???

and it only is a small part of the song?

I am not going to bother with automation, and i want that cpu to only be used while the plugin is processing audio.

you are catering to the user, no?

well this user would like to have a "smart disable" function in every host.
