Watch-out! It can become an addiction.

Thanks for the compliments on the pictures. I'll pass them along to the photographer, I'm sure she would find the gif humorous (not that I don't enjoy a good gif).

Mountain samples... Sounds like a bag full of rocks ! :hihi:

The photo's make it inspiring though ! Now I just need some "heavy breathing" samples and off we go ! 8)

Tx for the effort !

Oh Max, its so much more than that. :hihi:

More like a bag full of flies in some places.

Thanks for checking them out. :)

I had a passing thought...

I grew up in a place very similar to those photos (the hills of the San Francisco peninsula). There is even a huge drainage pipe like the one in your picture down the street from my parents house, a creek running through their back yard, and a quiet pond full of ducks a short hike away. About 15 years ago I bought a nice stereo mic and portable DAT setup specifically for making field recordings. And you know what I've used it for in those 15 years? Nothing. Not a damn thing. I guess it was just too much effort for me to pop in a tape and walk out into the back yard.

So hats off to you for making the effort to actually get out there, laptop and all, and make some nice recordings to share with the rest of us.
Incomplete list of my gear: 1/8" audio input jack.

These are very clear Genetic and very stereo :D

Storm drain ones are great and the stream :D

I bet you were the only one on that mountain with so much gear !

Some years ago, with a bunch of friends, we went into the mountains over here with all my music stuff (instruments, P.A. and a generator). We played all night long ! 8)

A unique experience !!! The birds are still talking about it !

thanks deastman. The great thing about Palomar is that atmosphere isn't "polluted" with sounds of motors, etc. Its pretty easy to get nature sounds, a plane or two will fly over and maybe a car ever once and a while, but other than that nothing else needs to be cut out of the recordings.

Thanks Spe3D. :D

That's true Max, more gear than Bull Frog Hunters who only carry a single net. Still it makes feel really cool. :hihi:

haha...made me look for some promo picture for some gear I used to manufacture. Basically a harness, it allowed a sound guy to carry 4 wireless, 4 lavs, a handheld mic, a shotgun on a pole, the mixer, extra batteries blah blah blah fairly comfortably, and be able to climb/hike into the srangest areas.
I looked like a total goof wearing it, but at the end of a long day I was the only one still up to 'drinks-at-the-pool'

I wish I could stick the laptop in the backpack with the battery. The suitcase I carry the laptop in just works so well at silencing the fan noise etc. I'm still searching for a way to enable me carrying one mic in each hand. As of now I have the backpack for the battery, the suitcase for the laptop in one hand and the two mics in the other. I really like the flexibility that two separate stand gives, give the mics 50 ft. between each other for a huge stereo image.

Sorry but its the last pic I have. The mop head making noise in the storm drain.

THANX! I love the "On top of a stream" There were some talking tho' but I just edited it and now I have a seamless loop of that stream! cool! Now its 00:30:823 sec

POINTERS: Be sure to stay hush for about 2 or 3 minutes when doing nature stuff like that! ( streams, birds, mountain air, etc...)

Also to create a "Natural" Stereo image, set your mics so that you can fit your head in between them. I'll show you what I mean with a graph. You can also try using one of those Styrofoam heads and creat your own stereo head! Like the Newmann KU 100
Having the mics so far does gives a WIDE stereo image but its not very natural!
Does not mean you're wrong!

Glad you liked the stream. The stream was the first bit of "field" recording I ever did with this setup so I was kinda excited. I was thinking the exact same thing when I was cutting this up for use (next time be quiet). I usually put a lot of distance between the mics because I like a larger than life stereo image, but I'll take the realistic (mics head width) approach into consideration for my next sampling trip.

Thanks again for checking and giving suggestions. :)

spaced microphones work great in a defined space (with walls, ceilings, floors and such) but outside you can get a more accurate image with an x-y pattern or an m-s setup. This has to do with the lack of reflections.
The advantage of recording m-s in this situation is that you can control the amount of separation 'after-the-fact'. (note- that if you compare an x-y vs. m-s recordings they will not sound anywhere close to the same. I much prefer the x-y sound)
The advantage of m-s comes from not having to balance the gains of your channel recordings and the mixer outputs are going into a video camera (that you're not holding, the camera person is doing that! ). Then m-s is a good thing.

On recording in a room, spaced omni microphones are what I preferred, because I like the sound and I like how , when processed through a Dolby pro-logic decoder, much of the room reverb is steered to the rear speakers.

Of course... YMWV as this is just my opinion.
