But is there a comprible production suite out there that is as low cost and flexible? I really wish I could get my hands on Cubase SX3 but I don't have the money right now, but is there anything else out there that features a decent piano roll, step sequencer and vsti capabilities?

Well, FL has all of that, so why not just get FL?

frankly, I can't think of anything that does piano roll and step sequencer better than Fruity..and I'm a Cubase user.

Cakewalk Kinetic 2 is kinda interesting...I don't think it is extremely flexible, but I would recommend it to a beginner with 70 bux or whatever it costs.

Maybe Energy XT?

Give Phrazor a try. It's similar to FL and Kinetic2 in a way but lot more flexible. Preorder is 29 euros

Cubase SX3 to FL is like Oil and Water (although you can mix FL&SX together):)
I mean they both have their strengths and weaknesses.. I stopped using SX when the automation became so time consuming.. I would have to agree that you should try eXT..

Fl is a great software. You can do all with it. Mixing Included. You have to get a pair of synths, and effects (i use V station, Sonalksis eq & some free stuff) and you will work in a versatile studio.

Oh yes. I'm a Sonar user and FL is so much easier. FL makes me want to make music, while other hosts make music feel like work.

If you're used to FL, just stick to FL. Why do you want to switch? I switched from Sonar to FL myself.

hmm, so it looks like the opinoin on FL seems pretty strong here. I would have to agree with all of you though, because I've tried Sonar and eXT, and they do have some good features, but as a 3 year user of FL, I'm starting to think that it's my best option still.

Mainly why I asked this, is because as a VST host, FL is pretty solid, its just when it comes to mixing in wav's and editing them, it's not so much my cup of coffee, at least when compared to audition.

Just figured there was something out there that was "better" than FL at what it does, but it's looking like FL is still going to be my best choice.

That is a PRIMO combination IMHO, if you like FL. I have AA 2.0, but I'm still mainly fidgetting in FL for now. AA is a really sweet program, but I'm yet to master it properly... ultimately my approach will be to write/sequence in FL, and export the material to AA for the real-deal tweak-ISMS in mixing/down. Some of the plugins in AA are simply fantastic, and now with real time, its made things alot quicker since 1.5. I think it's a great combination. I could only suggest making AA much more of a permanent partner in your final workflow. I don't think there're any super complete do-it-all programs for anything. Even the pro's have all kinds of software for all stages of production. Just find what you need to fill the gaps...

AA and FL Studio work very well together, especially with AA set as FL's default wave editor.

yea, I've been using AA ever since it was "cool edit pro" , back before adobe bought it out.

I'm just not too impressed with what adobe did with the program that makes it so slow, I'm running on a 1.5 ghz machine so it's pretty noticeable on my end (grr at cheap un-upgradable motherboards!)

Another issue that i'm not so happy with in FL is the fact that when I want to mix down a song to wav files for mixing and mastering in audition, I have to manually go through and do it, I wish they had a feature that would simply mix down each pattern line to separate wav files for use in other mastering programs...I guess i'll have to go through the pain : /

FL's great and all...
