Any suggestions for a host to drive reason?

I've been looking around it seems there are actually very few sequencers that offer rewire support in a decent price range. I want something to drive reson(which has a shit sequencer in my opinion) but given that i'm happy to have ONLY reason for sound i don't need loads of bundled extras, synths, FX or features i don't need.

Tracktion seems to be the obvious choice but i didn't like it much when i used it before and i'm sure i keep reading about various issues with it.

So would anyone care to comment on how other sequencer/tudios/hosts work with reason? Like FLStudio, Cubase(the cheaper version!) and so on.

p.s. i'm into writing breaks and other dance type stuff if it helps any.

ACID 6 is actually really good with Reason now......EXCEPT the current version has a nasty bug that causes crashes when they are rewired a lot. Support told me that this has been fixed and will be in the next patch (6.0b).

People seem to like Live and Reason combined too.

I have to say that I've been very pleased with the Live 5 Rewire interface. Reason integrates very easily with Live. I often use Redrum to generate beats into Live and have never had any problems.

True enough. That's why I usually render it to audio right off. And that's VERY easy to do in Live.

But I understand your point -- if midi is important, I always do that in Cubase instead.

Well as some folks around here know, I have a real problem with Live and re-wired Reason. Live cannot be accurately used to control Reason synths via its own midiclips. At least in the current 5.2. We will have to see what 6 brings us.

Currently Live delays the output of its midi data stream in rewire to Reason. I have no idea why, but its a bug and it has now been accepted as a problem by the Abes.

The delay time is affected by the VST and VSTi already in place in Live. If you don't use any other VST then you won't experience a problem. But if you try and mix a Reason rack with a bunch of VST synths and FX in Live, then you are going to get real sloppy timing.

The only way you can accurately control Reason and a load of VST, is to use Reason's own sequencer for its own instruments and Live to do the rest.

Project 5 V2 might be an option, but moreso cakewalk studio home sonar 4, it's only 149 retail.

sonar's midi is decent, or see even better if you can grab a cheap version of sonar 5 studio edition which has midi enchancements...check ebay for a legit new cheap copy...or are u still a student? great academic deals on cakewalk.

seriously, sonar or cubase, dont even bother with anything else.

I just went and had a look on the steinberg site, and it certainly looks like a very straightforward environment on the surface, with all the essentials in place. Have to say that the details and comparison charts confused me a bit, so if any one could answer a few questions i'd appreciate it.

Can I (all with SE version) :-

* Automate parameters in reason via curves/lines in cubase
* have track folders(like eXT) for midi/audio/automation tracks
* have PRECISE control over my drum patterns using cubase drum editors
* expect ROCK SOLID performance (reason gives me this)!!
* easily render my reason tracks into cubase to master(if i feel the need)

oh and one last thing - is the automatic beat slicing any good? one obvious area thats lacking in reasons devices (no i don't like using rigidly pre-split rex files, i want to use different formats and have control myself!!)

i'm gonna go check out some prices and look on ebay!
