With Cockos offering Reaper free until 1.0 release, we have a great audio-oriented sequencer - at no cost.
Sonicbytes new plugin/host Phrazor is also available free of charge until final release (ETA: mid August). Since Phrazor strength is its MIDI capabilities, it complements Reaper beatifully. It already has pattern based composition, a powerful arp and chorder and re-usable effect racks.

Add some freeware synths and effects and you have a completely free and extremely powerful sequencer/ soft studio combination.

This two are only temporarily freebies. While Reaper 0.99 will still be available after the release, you better grab Phrazor soon. There's also a pre-order thing going, where you can get the final release at a mere 30 EUR.

Similarly, Luna Free is, erm, free. And presumably is the only that shall remain so.

Luna free looks good. I own Audition, yet Its too hard to resist trying it. Looks too good LOL.
