Flutter reduction plug (freeware)

http://jens.org/stuff/aflut/
This is a VST plugin to reduce flutter (pitch variations) from analog tapes caused by excentricity or dirt on the capstan axle (or to correct for any periodic pitch variations in audio material).
The reason I had to write this is that there was nothing out there that would do this processing reliably. There are lots of "vibrato" plugins but none of them are at all suited for solving this very particular problem.
What makes this plugin different from your normal "vibrato" plugin is
* Very precise frequency control (down to a ten-thousandth of a Hz)
* Stereo processing
* Phase of the cyclical pitch change is precisely locked to the VST time position so the correction is reproducible
I know you guys are probably better at poking holes and finding bugs in stuff so if anyone finds a use for this (pretty unlikely but..) and it doesn't work as intended let me know! aflut@jens.org
Cheers,

Thanks! I'll give it a shake next week - I've got a cassette coming in that might benefit from this...don't know the diameter of the capstans involved (play only I guess) so I'll have to figure that out first.

not sure when i'll have time to test this, but i'd just like to thank you for making+sharing this baby.i never heard of anything similar.converting my old cassetees is a big job i just haven't had time to do yet,so it's very good to know about this one.
maybe it can do some good effects when abused too?

I have tested it pretty extensively the last few days, and there is a frequency stability issue related to VST automation.. check back on that page in a few hours or tomorrow and there should be a corrected version. Sorry!deaf dunderkwac wrote:well...

I sort of doubt that since the vibrato is very very mellow even at the maximum setting. The only redeeming thing about this plug is (should be) that the phase and frequency are reproducible reliably. But like I said above, I found some strange behavior and now I think I have gotten to the bottom of why that is.. so, need to fix recompile upload.spacedad wrote: maybe it can do some good effects when abused too?

Looking foward to the latest, and save me some testing time I haven't had time for

I'm sorry for myself since I tweaked the phase on a bunch of material with the buggy plug... arggh =)deaf dunderkwac wrote: nothing to be sorry about!

So many people trying their hardest to put these "imperfections" back into the digital realm, and now we want to get rid of them! All's fair in love and war.
I'm only kidding, I assume this is meant for "EXTREME" cases.

ok,that's fine.as long as it does what it's supposed to do,that's the main thing.JensJohansson wrote:I sort of doubt that since the vibrato is very very mellow even at the maximum setting.

As I have tons of old cassette-tapes, I am very glad you share this. My first efforts of burning the oooldies to CD did of course INCLUDE all noise that could be thought of, and while you plugin can't cool down a house
it might reduce flutter
(a german kid once said "Zitterkrach" to a tape he heard of my old ones). Thanks!

Jens -- thanks for the cool plug, but...
What is a guy with some of the hottest chops on the planet doing doing here with us common rabble?

Trying to mix something that has a bit of flutter on it =)papatomany wrote:Jens -- thanks for the cool plug, but... what is a guy with some of the hottest chops on the planet doing doing here with us common rabble?

Thanks Jens - I was having trouble hearing this at first on a stereo cassette transcribed track in Sonar5. But then I cloned the stereo track, inserted MSED Encoder before antiflutter, set all antiflutter params to 0 on the MID track, tweaked the params on the SIDE track, routed the 2 tracks back to MSED Decoder buss. Now I have some real nice flutter and can hear what I'm doing. I didn't try your method of putting a delay in that you mention in the instructions.
Anyway I'm trying to get this stereo track to sound better - I'm thinking the stereo sides might benefit from antiflutter. The cassette is pretty worn and the highs seem to warble (maybe not flutter) but anyway...thanks for the tool! Kind of just a status report!
