I can understand too many vst's or effects like reverb causing playback woes like hesitation ,clicks and pops like I'm having but I'm only playing back 1 track ez drums, 1 bass guitar and 2 rhythm guitars. No vst.
I'm running windows xp with dual amd 2.0 processors and 3 gigs of ram. I believe my disks are 7200rpm have the latest drivers.
I'm using the fireface 800 with latest drivers and latency set at 512.I tried changing it up and down but no difference. I've played with all the vst engine settings and disconnected my delta sound card to avoid conflicts.
There is no way this is normal.There seems to be something very basic goin on here but I can't figure out what.
Is there a chance windows doesn't know to distribute more power to the audio?
I'd appreciate some serious advice please.Getting desperate.

Did you check to see which drivers Cubase is using? Seems simple, but if it's using a non-asio driver, could be the cause of your trouble.

Man, you should be laughing with that setup!!! My god.

I'd say you got yourself a hardware conflict or a PCI Latency problem. I'd suggest trying to look for conflicts, try the PCI Latency Tool - oh wait: you're using a fireface...hmmm...weird. I haven't used a Firewire card, but it sounds like something is gunking up the flow to yout fireface. Is the Fireface hooked up directly to a firewire input or do you have a firewire PCI adapter?

Kill all unneeded background processes?

Is your machine clean of spyware and virii?

And in the old days, I'd have said try turning off Hyperthreading in your BIOS. But I think SX does better with that in recent versions.

I have "heard" not all firewire adapters are created equal and you really want to use on based on the TI chipset.

Oh! That's a good one, Admiral! Recently, my brother simply could not get Cubase to even open a project after a re-format, and I asked him to try unchecking "Use Dual-processing" (or whatever it says) in Cubase's Device Setup, and that fixed it. So try the BIOS settings and Cubase's.

OH! I had troubles like this too until I turned off an unneeded SATA controller on my MB. Perhaps a firmware upgrade would have been enough, but in my case I wasn't using it anyway.

So, disable any unused disk controllers. Network adapters too. Might help, might not.

Still, turning off the dual processor can help in narrowing down the problem.

Are you using the latest SX update?

I'm hooked up directly to a firewire input.

Right, well, I bet the answer now lay in the hyperthreading or dual processor option in Cubase.
