I'm wondering if there are any really excellent standalone chorus plug-ins, or a multi-function plug with a chorus to die for. Did a search here and didn't find a topic on this.

hmm. voxengo analog flux suite chorus and voxengo vintage modulator are pretty much excellent, with even oversampling to increase accuracy (missing in all native choruses I've ever seen).

Then there are the decent freebies called ag-works CH-1 and CH-2. Some people seem to be getting good mileage out of Kjaerhus Audio GMO-1 as well.

That CH-1 plugin is one of the best vst chorus plugs I've ever heard.

true dat. It sounds a whole lot like Univibe in vibrato mode. In fact, if the author ever wanted, he/she could easily make the best Univibe phaser mode plugin as well.

(and oh boy do I want something like that!)

Absolutely.

Another good one to check out is Prodyon's Extreme Chorus plug (called something like that...Pneumo4 maybe?)...that thing sounds great to my ears.

CH-2 looks interesting. I have GMO-1 somewhere, but haven't reinstalled it since replacing hard drive, and now I'm not sure I know where the license file is. Someone in another thread suggested Hexaline from Big Tick.

I've tried both comercial and freebies extensively and decided that this is one of the hardest "best of"'s possible. All choruses are very different in the way the slice through the spectrum. Put up a sonogram and play through one and you'll cleasrly SEE the difference, but the sound is really a matter of whether or not it's suited for the job at hand. There aren't that many choruses despite the fact that they are among the most internally variable of any plugins. Same goes for phasers and flangers.

CH-1/2 are pretty sweet, but they crash my FL and act funny lots.

Charsiesis is another really good one as well.

They're all delays when it comes down to it.

I was recently impressed with the chorus of the Dune Delay. No demo, though, but it costs, like, $5.00.

I usually wind up going with Bass Chorus for all my chorus needs. CH-2 is beautiful, but uses way too much CPU.

Most developers look at it like that: oh, just another delay modulation. booooring!!
Actually the flanger/chorus stompboxes that really sound good have a lot of extra cirquitry beside the parts that delay and modulate. Accurate emulations are hard to find indeed.

actually, *above* a certain frequency. You get a control over this, because with basses you generally want to leave the lowest frequencies alone, and just do the chorus widening on the high frequency content.

Of course you could do this with a crossover EQ using any chorus you want.

Fuzzpils's Charsiesis is something a little different, but cool.

I also found the Voxengo AF Chorus to be really, really nice. I think I need the Analogflux suite

Thanks for the ag-works tip, I haven't heard of their choruses before.

On Mac, there's even more a lack of a really good choruses, because there are no Voxengos and Kjaerhuses yet.

Actually, I use Scarbee VKFX, Korg MDE-FX (esp. Polysix Ensemble), PSP84 and sometimes (oh dear) the internal plugs of Logic.

I just ordered AT2, from what I heard in the demo, its choruses sound really good, too.

It would be great to see a multimodulation/delay plugin like Pitch-/Timeblender, or even better, a good H3000 emulation...
