Looking for an effect to add VIBRATO to a signal!

I have several VSTi's that for whatever reason offer no vibrato, and I'm looking for a way to add that effect. In particular I want to add a sine/triangle wave vibrato to the signal of my Slayer 2.5.3 (guitar) output. The depth of which would be controlled by the Mod Wheel on my controller (A-Audio Radium 49). Maybe I'm over-simplifying this idea, but it seems like some type of LFO effect could add such an effect to a signal, much like an effect can add tremolo to a signal, the hard part might be the mod wheel control. I don't know.

Similarly, is this something I could create in SynthEdit? Something like a simple Modulation module added to a signal chain with a mod wheel as a controller.

What do you think!? Any ideas on an effect for this goal, or a way to create one?

Tremolo and vibrato are often confused. One is changing the pitch and the other the volume. Which one do you mean?

Modulating volume is easy to do after the synth, modulating pitch can be done by sending pitch wheel info to the synth. Both should not pose a problem with the mod wheel.

If actuall vibrato(pitch-change) an LFO is the way to go. A LFO as effect on a audiotrack would need midi also, and be run on a host software that support both on an audio track.

I think GSnap can do this:
"Additionally, GSnap will respond to pitch-bend and modulation MIDI messages to apply pitch-bend and vibrato. The Pitch Bend, Vibrato and Vib Speed parameters control these effects."

Look here:

It would be a simple thing in a sampler, to load the wave-file and apply LFO to it, but not in realtime then.

Hi

My Delay unit "Time" should do this nicely,

1) set delay time to 0
2) set up your LFO
3) assign a CC to LFO depth for external mod
4) set all to wet

and you should be all wobbly

Of course the Chorus part of Depth would also do this but I think Time would be easier and more versatile.

Time has a Demo version so try it out - link below in my sig

you can apply a vibrato by using a pitch shifter, or with a phaser. with the phaser the vibrato will be quite different, but this is the method used in guitar vibrato pedals.

you can try http://xhip.cjb.net/xhipeffects xhipphaser if you dont already have another one, but my effects currently dont implement any parameter modulation by cc or modwheel. you would have to use an additional plugin to send modwheel to the parameter in the phaser.

The old Jerome Shmitt plugin pack has one such effect. It's very clean stereo vibrato with time-sync capability and can be found here:

http://www.sounduser.com/software/vstplugs/p18.html

There is also a similar plugin from ISM. It's mono and not as configurable and can be found here:

http://www.ismism.de/home_e.htm

Both are very simple and both are very free!

Kjaerhus Golden Modulator - choose your wave shape, and it can sync to host tempo - with variable phase, so you can get it feeling right with the groove. Vibrato, Tremolo, Panning, Phasing, Chorus, Delay - it does it all.

I just wish the delays could be set accurately to the millisecond :(

I have asked this very same question on countless ocasions over the past couple of years and, as yet, have not found a simple solution.

I now tend to use the 'pitch bend' on the Slayer plug in as no other method gets close to a vibrato.

Most people, when you talk about 'vibrato' assume you mean tremolo.
As Bertkoor says, two completely different effects.
Surely, there's an oppertunity for someone who can program synths?

Any chorus set to mono, 100% wet?

i used the same plain patch without modulation. first with chorus modulation depth 0%, then adjusted to 100%.

try xhip chorus. set the phase offset to 30%, modulation depth 100%, lfo phase 0%, speed 5hz or so, wet 100%, dry 0%, feedback 0%. you'll get a perfect vibrato effect. when i say perfect, i mean perfect. it is fractionally correct, more correct than a vibrato applied via sampling and modulation of playback rate. the greater the vibrato depth, the more difference in application based upon frequency. higher frequencies will get less vibrato. at a low depth like 30%, there will be a linear enough responce to be very difficult to notice for humans.

Of course I meant VIBRATO, as I stated. I only mentioned tremolo as a simple example of modulation of the signal! But it's true 20 years ago many people did confuse the two terms in the Ozarks.

Slayer 2 has many interesting facets, but why they would make a guitar sim without a fully definable pitch wheel (up can be set, but down is preset at 1 octave!?) and NO vibrato effect availability makes me think the designer has never played guitar, at least not LEAD guitar!

Thanks for all the ideas! There is a small further problem in that Slayer (in particular) has "preset" that rolling the mod wheel up adds a dampening effect. But I'm hoping I can have the vibrato effect kick in before the dampening does (the dampening only REALLY kicks in at about half-roll of the mod wheel).

Of course the REAL answer would be to get inside the actual program and make things right with a few relatively simple option switches, but that's over my head.

I'm going to try many of these suggestions and see what can be achieved in this quest. Thanks again.

Also if anyone knows of a better guitar sim I'd love to hear about it!

I've got a simple one. PM me and I'll email it to you tomorrow.

"Rednef twin" has a lovely tremolo with coloration reminiscent of a Fender Twin Reverb. It's free.

Don't forget zero feedback.
Also, it may depend on what waveform the chorus was using to modulate. I believe some choruses (not my own :) ) use a triangle function to modulate the buffer-read position, this results in a square function of pitch modulation. That can work nicely as a subtle "detuned-style" chorus, but would be terrible as vibrato - more like an out-of-tune trill.

It is STILL vibrato we are talking about.

What ciFiArtMan want is a vibrato plugin where vibrato depht can be controlled with a midi controller signal.
And if it is guitar vibrato it should only go positive because you can only bend the strings up when doing it on the fretboard, like this ^^^^^
