I see a lot of good bargains over at the market place these days, and I could use something to slap at the master output that will give my mix some magic.. But I've shopped a bit much lately, so I don't have loads to spend.. (somebody take my card away.. :hihi:)

Anyway, will these below-$100 offers give me what I want (easy but good mastering), and which one has your likings?

- Kjaerhus GCO-1 Golden Compressor
- PSP MixPack
- DiscoDSP FX bundle

Post

c'mon, my last FX thread went so well! :hihi:

I think the GCO-1 is an all-rounder. CAN be used for mastering, but not designed with that intention. Maybe also look at his MPL-1: http://www.kvraudio.com/get/2270.html

Yeah, I saw the MPL-1 as well, looks very nice.. Thanks for the reply! :)

And don't forget Voxengo Elephant or Polysquasher (or another of his limiters) in your shortlist!

This one is VERY cool...take a look at near auto-mastering a track.

It looks nice, but it's out of my price range unfortunately..

Anyway, I tried Arguru's Stardust yesterday, and it gave some very nice results. I think it's either freeware or the discoDSP bundle, as I was very impressed by ThrillMe as well.

Post

Um, Dominion kicks ass freeware-wise - for transients and warmth.

You definitely need a multiband compressor and I use *all* of the free ones ;)

I trust endorphin with a lot of tasks.

Of the ones you listed my vote would go with PSP.
Not only is it good but, judging from the results I managed to get the little I've used it, it's newbie-friendly.

Haven't tried it but AAMS (Auto Audio Mastering System) looks interesting. AAMS V2 actually claims to do the whole mastering (EQ, multi-band compression and limiting) automatically. Since it's also very moderately priced (€50) it's likely to be in the "too good to be true" category but when I actually have something that's worth mastering I'll definitely try the demo.

does the title to this have anything to do with the seasons, or was i just misled?
Why cry about your own desires, when I could have them and leave you standing in the sadness of your own....

:hihi: just referring to the many sales at the market place.. all of the plugs I mentioned in the first post is discounted in some way, hence it seems to be mastering season.. :P

Yeah, that seems too good a deal for Eur50.. I'll check it out when I come home though, thx.. :)

Anyway, I think it's between the said bundles now, disco vs psp.. I'm demoing both, and have them set up like this:

I'm getting satisfying results (in my ears) from both bundles, although the psp mixpressor introduces a slight delay (expected, right?).

Is this a 'nonono wtf are you doing' setup? I'm a complete n00b at mastering, hence I need something easy to use..

I think you have to turn off the "DEL" button which is lookahead and causes delay (I think it's lookahead...)

It looks pretty complicated to me but if you're enjoying yourself then you know - sounds great! If you find some of my old posts (I hope they're old) you'll see some pretty hairy contraptions too! :hihi:
