Ok,

Just for an FYI……

"Spain" was a tune written by Chick Corea. The tune in and of itself is a hybrid between Spanish elements, and Jazz.

In my version of Spain, after the intro, I added a very distinct Disco Drum beat (something I borrowed from Boogie Nites). In addition to that, I arranged the bass line so that it did the characteristic walking octaves. Adding two crankin Les Pauls harmonizing together (ala Allman Brothers) was yet another genere brought into the mix.

So the bottom line, I DID blend a number of different generes together. I think I did too good of a job for this contest, because I think some people missed it.

I have a really fast computer, some good mics, vintage musical instruments, and lots of fancy software. Just need some talent

Well,

If I'm elected president, I would start off with one of these as the contest title.

"Same as it Ever Was" , or "2", or "Get Together" or "Funky Monkey"

I like "Same as it ever was", which reminds me of my beloved David Byrne and "Funky Monkey"....yeah, that's it....many groovy tunes! Or "Same as it ever was 2 get together 2 funky monkeys"

Funky Monkey sounds good -- might get me off of my classical binge.

I stand corrected, then. Normally, I think I'm pretty good with musical references, but honestly I'm not that familiar with Chick Corea's work, so I missed it completely. It sounded good anyway.

Markleford, you quitter! ;)

Nah, I've loved your themes (not to say I didn't like Robs :))

I must say my favourite KvR contest had to be the cheese one end of last year. The entries were all just fab. I still listen to the majority of them; especially that imitation-cheap-casio-auto-accompanied-mouse-sing-space-oddity...

ATB

And I'm sure Scoops is as up to the task as both Rob and You were :)

Now we gotta break in another bloody new mod! :smack:

You did a man's job Mark! :tu:

Thanks for all your time and effort mate :)

Good luck Scooper! ;)

Many Cheers,

I just need a re-charge. I'm getting definite music burn out now, since it's pretty much my day job. Thinking about selling the lot, save for the software: all the drums and guitars and horns take up a lot of physical space for something that no longer brings me joy.

(Same thing happened when I did freelance writing: never went back to writing fiction for fun. Now I'm worried that if I go for an MFA in photography/digital imaging that the trend will continue. Art and commerce, eh?)

Anyway, hopefully getting the contest into someone else's hands will allow *me* to be challenged for a change. :hihi:

At any rate, I think I've been contest admin for like 3 different runs now, filling in for others who needed a break. Temporary Reichminister of Contests, I started as, but somehow it stuck. I'm proud of most of my themes, though, however frustrated I may be in not being able to come up with something Barnadine or oddbods finger or knockman *can't* manage to place in! ;)

And I can only hope that I'll still be around to take the reigns when you all manage to crush Scoops' spirit. I'd like to make it to 5 years of continuous contest entries for myself, next June. Maybe I'll run a "Markleford's Hubris" theme contest of my own covers and mashups. :hihi:

Thanks for the sentiments, mates.

Maybe it's more about the personal joy you get from your own creations -- not a bad thing you know. ;)

Many Blessings,

Hi Scoops. I remember the 70s, so I knew exactly what you were doing. And you did do it well. Only problem for me in terms of voting was that your version of "Spain" reminded me of some of the "smooth jazz" versions that I heard back when the song was ubiquitous - you know, jazz musicians trying to make a buck by blending jazz and funk or jazz and disco. I don't think you copied them. In fact, I think you did exactly what you say you did. But I already had the sound in my head. I think I have just waaaaaay too long a musical memory! Regardless, your version's a keeper, even though I didn't vote for it.

Nice guitars, by the way. Of course, Al DiMeola would have played everything 5 times faster... but only half as tastily. ;-)

Oh man, does that sound familiar! I just cycle round and round my interests. Burn out on music... do digital imagery. Burn out on digital imagery... do writing. Etc.

For my day job, though, I'm a magazine editor. Clearing the cobwebs out of written language is something I never grow tired of.

Or of course, you could do what Rachmiel does for the Reaktions compilations...

Here's a sample from (x-song) - make every sound in your song from it! Or how about... here's a free vsti - make every sound in your song from it! (It's almost always "make every sound in your song from this").

Can you imagine the, er, uh, JOY you would spread here by doing a theme like that? Think about it! :hihi:

Oh wait! That's just the "Here... use this" theme, isn't it?
