I'm wondering, there are limiters which increasing the loudness by taming peaks. But are there any plugins which leave the peaks untouched and increase loudness by anything below -15db, all 'peaks' above that are left untouched? What is this effect called if it exists? Thanks!

Hey guys, I think he's onto something here. This is a really great idea!!! If we could somehow, automatically adjust the volume, based on the original volume, WOW that could really maximize the loudness!!!

I don't know about any software/hardware that does that, but there are techniques to do that. Get a hold of Bob Katz's book Mastering Audio

He talks about Upward cpmpression and expansion which are exactly what you are requesting - i.e. increasing the perceived loudness by bring the softer parts up in volume while not destroying the dynamics through peak squashing.

The simplist plugin I have for upward compression is the elemental audio compressor. You can graphically just say, leave everything from -15db up untouched, and make everything under -15db louder. You can achieve the same effect with almost any compressor using attack and release times, but the former EA plug is just so simple.

So the effect i'm looking for is called upward compression? I'm not sure if that's really what i'm after. Imagine this: Get a short instrument, lets say a percussion sound, a clap. Apply a 10 second reverb on it - i don't want to destroy the very quite parts at the tail of the reverb (for e.g. from 7 seconds onwards) and i don't want the high peaks to be touched as well (for e.g. first 1-2 seconds). Basicly, the 'middle' volume range can be increased. Does it make sense?

I tried DYNAM-IZER (http://www.rogernicholsdigital.com/dynam-izer.htm) a while ago but the results i got didn't really work how i expected, although i loved the idea and the gui is really good and very intuitive.

Doesn't any DSP add delay/latency? Data is being recalculated.
That is not latency and the audio signal from a plug-in using allot of CPU wont be more delayed than one using a little CPU. As long as the CPU is able to keep up with its calculations the only latency you got is the one in your audio card. If a CPU can't keep up you will get audio dropouts.

Are you saying that plug-ins generally don't cause delay? Then what is the purpose of PDC, found in most hosts now?

No, an expander makes everything below a certain threshold even lower than it was (thus 'expanding' your dynamic range).

I'd say that most plugins don't add latency and PDC is for those who do.Simple as that,really.
