Another self-promo, so tune out now if you find that tiresome...

Sick Puppy from the Psycho Toolkit bundle can do some really nasty things. It doesn't do any chopping/reordering, but it can give a really glitchy sound. It performs "wavepeak analysis distortion", but goes way beyond what you'd call "distortion". Think terminally faulty radio. I'm pretty confident you'll find the algorithm nowhere else...
...except - I recycled a tweaked version of it to provide the speaker buzz feature in Trash Triode.

If I wanna do something like this I usually start off with as many percussive sounds as possible. Its not a good idea to just get an 808 kit and then think you can change it all with FX.

Get some bells, some tamborines, some pans, some string plucks and scratches - a pen clicking would give a good hi-hat sound.

Some clever programming should then follow. Try programming the hats in 3/4 timing, the kick in 7/4 timing and the snare in 4/4.. if you switch around the different timings for the beats as well, that give some interesting results. So for a bar the kick might be in 7/4 but the next bar switch it to 4/4 and switch whatever used to be in 4/4 to 7/4 - sounds convoluted?? Its supposed to ;)

Then if you treat the sounds with some light distortion and other basic effects, I personally think you'll come out with a more impressive sounding beat than you would just throwing Jack Darks FX on there.

put all of these items in a tumble dryer and record the output.

From the Readme:
Limitations
-----------
The demo version will bitcrush the sound every now and then.
So in a mangling plugin you'd have a hardtime knowing what the demo limitation is if it's a bitcrusher :hihi:

oh that was a joke- this guy posted on here somewhere saying PLSS PLSS every two seconds and I adopted it in jest. I've been doing it, see off topic.

Hmm that's interesting. I think I hear a lot of that in groups like Plej, Afuken. Do you switch up the time signatures in the sequencer or do you leave your sequencer at 4/4? Do you use a sequencer that lets you adjust the time signature for each track or something? Not sure how that works.

I basically do it manually in most cases, only because currently an EXT seq. can only have one time signature - if tracks could have independent time sigs...

Anyway.. if you're in 4/4 then you know 7/4 is only three extra crotchets to a bar, I use my ears to decide where the beats should go. So essentially you do it manually, counting the beats as you would normally, but the seq runs in 4/4.

If tracks could have their own time signature (and even tempo perhaps) information and it was fully automatable you could definitely get some strange stuff happening.

A lot of electronic musos I feel are applying jazz traditions to their music without even knowing it, although I'm sure some of them are consciously doing it also.
