After some years of works and tests, this would be for me :
- 5.1 with integrated surround module and multichannel editing : Cubase SX
- 5.1 with integrated surround module and stereo editing : Samplitude
- more than 5.1 with integrated surround module and multichannel editing : Nuendo (12), Protools TDM/HD (8 channels)
- more than 5.1 with integrated surround module and stereo editing : Digital Performer
- 5.1 and more without integrated surround module (needs plugins) and multichannel editing : Podium
- 5.1 and more without integrated surround module (needs plugins) and stereo editing : Reaper (and also Tracktion and EnergyXT)
- best possibilities up to 32 channels : Podium
- 5.1 with video editing : Vegas
To avoid (surround module limited, no multichannel plugins, no multichannel editing) : Sonar, Logic Pro...
Good luck !

what i like about protools (and miss in the otherwise very great nuendo surround implementation) is the support for "multi mono" plugins, basically making all your plugins surround compatible. without any "link" obviously, but in many cases thats absolutely ok.
especially for eqs it makes a lot of sense. as "multi mono", you can use absolutely every eq, including your favourite one. without such a feature, youre stuck with the little surround eq plugins there are.
