I suspect the trouble is not Win98 itself, but:
* lack of sufficient RAM
* slow harddisk
* slow video card (using only 256 colours is faster)

"maybe a system full of crap" , nope.. i "cleaned everything" unistalled everything i didn't need, sure its the first ones and its a laptop, (remember some time ago asking in a computer store if i could do something and the guys advice not touch it, ain't worthed) , i will have to buy something, some other old computer cus im broke ,
i tried for some time, theres a few software out there that works very fast on win98 too, and some quality and cpu efficient vsts, but to give you an idea, i use to get tired just to waiting folders to open, wait for windows to load, and the constant craches and having to wait windows to load again . when i tried for first time, great, i could see i could run audiomulch, energyxT demo or buzz, modplug , with no problems, everything was fine, after a month under this conditions i felt tired :roll: . now i turn power on, DOS loads quickly,
im enjoying impulse tracker (remind me of old games), seems very much cpu friendly on this computer (fastracker is good too) , now im limited to this tools and just got to see if "they adapt" to the "noise" i was making before, .. word for DOS works good too and i can open docs later on winXP .
for now this got to work . :roll:

any recomendation? or i should don't even bother?
impulse tracker :) yes, bother, it's worth it. use IT2 instruments, they can be very nice, with envelopes and all. fasttracker2 is good too, however i could never get it to mix well on my old soundblaster. good luck. if you aren't familiar with tracking, go here:

laugh if you want, but that was a nice package :) i used it myself with a keyboard i borrowed from a buddy (a roland juno1) -- it was what i learned midi on :)

it took us ages to figure out that OUT goes to IN and IN goes to OUT :) hehe then we had to figure out how to get local off so we wouldn't cause a midi feedback loop. ah the old days :)

that was a lot of fun. of course the juno1 wasn't multitimbral that i recall, we later hooked up his korg 01w to it and had a blast for days on end. i always wanted to figure out how to record while sequencing into a wav file so i could use his korg samples. :hihi: i can remember trying to run desqview with cakewalk and running the command line wave record utility that came with the sb.

everyone remember dr. sbaitso?

:hihi:

Back then I worked with paper and pencil at an old upright piano. I had a reel-to-reel Sony tape deck with a couple of mics too.

You could set up linux. Alternately, it wouldn't be difficult at all to dual boot. Not a lot of the old trackers still support DOS.

This should get you started building the system. {you don't mention what sort of hardware you have} and give you a few sequencer options.

Some primitive audio stuff was achieved through a Media Vision Pro AudioSpectrum 16 card. At the time it was better than the Sound Blaster, but Creative won that particular "VHS vs. Betamax" type of race.

This was in 1991, by the way. After that I stopped for a looong time...
You mean until pro cards became available?

So if you definitely want to go for good-ole MS-DOS, I suggest to run 4Dos on top of it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4DOS has most of the relevant info about it. Made my life under command prompts much easier!

For instance, 4Dos lets you execute data files by associating your fav program based on the file extension. You can define colours for file types, enter descriptions for files (file names in DOS can only be 8 + 3 chars long), create your own shortcut commands (even with a primitive character-based UI) and numerous other goodies.

One big downer for DOS: hardware support for modern devices like USB and non-soundblaster-compatible soundcards is next to inexistant. DOS seriously lacks driver support. So I wonder how you're going to get sound out of your laptop. Not impossible, but it might be difficult.

Good luck anyway ;-)

DOS? you mean AMIGA DOS?

DOS = acronym for Disk Operating System. Amiga had it's DOS, PC's had MS-DOS where MS = MicroSoft.

Whatever, it's just a platform to handle hardware, store files and run programs. What moutkie likes about it, is efficiency with resources and fast loading times. Each to their own...

I did INCREDIBLE stuff on a PC (386) and DOS, so I don't know what you are talking about. :P

"So I wonder how you're going to get sound out of your laptop."

the computer had a side partition with all the drivers need to run stored.:), it even "accepting" the cd-rom , and that is cool cus someone stolled my cd player (in a bad luck ahh) . and now im using DOS too to listem my cds (cubicplayer) , wrighting (word for DOS) , browsing (arachne) , digital image (neopaint) and of course Impulse Tracker (or fastracker).
serious , impulse tarcker and fasttracker can be really good, but i guess one must be very talent with samples to do a great song , if only we could have effects plugins (something like the vsts) with this ,i wouln't need much more. maybe in a couple of months i will see if i can get a machine with a few more power. but this is been a lesson for me, i really don't need a "super power" computer.

EDIT- its feels like the 90's again,i must be crazy, well in the end it will be a good laptop computer for my writhing (one of my other passions, of course not in english cus as you see i give many mistakes .)

Beware because an old PC is harder to emulate than another computer. For most trackers you'll have to use some SBPro (or gravis ultrasound, but good luck to find that) compatible hardware. Even Creative cards themselves are hardly compatible (and lost their OPL2 FM chip ages ago). Then good luck to free up as much RAM as possible for the less old DOS apps.

are you trolling or honestly this clueless about music heritage on computers? c=64/amiga had/has HUGE music scene.
