Classic vocoder sound - How do you get it?

Try a classic vocoder.
I love Jethro Tull, but I don't actually think i've heard "A". Sometimes stuff that sounds like a vocoder is actually a talk box. It's 1940's technology (Sparky the talking piano), and tends to sound better than a vocoder. Basically it's a loudspeaker with a tube that you insert into your mouth, and shape the sound with your mouth. Mic up the resulting sound - it's low tech and cheap to make yourself. I once made one with a burglar alarm horn, taped to a kitchen funnel, with some garden hose jammed onto the spout. Crude but effective.
A vocoder is a multiband eq that can be modulated with an input. There are plenty of plugins that do the same now.

Orange Vocoder is still the best VST vocoder - even after all these years. It has been used on many modern productions. It still doesnt beat my Procoder hardware rack though.

I use 4ormulator: http://www.kvraudio.com/get/1164.html and it does the job; the annoying part is that we have to open the interface each time we open the project to let the track play.
Eventually something intelligent will appear written here. Watch this space.
