Any user here (maybe JV-1080). Some experience and some opinions please. I am in some fight with myself and i am about to buy one unit so little help from you KVRers would be helpful.

There is probably nothing with similar sounds in VST...yet every day i see and learn something new here....

I own the XP-30, which is a JV2080 in an XP shell minus a feature or two, that makes it somewhere between the JV1080 and the JV2080.

Anyway. It's crap if you don't have any expansion boards. The XP/JV engine aliases a lot (bad Roland noise!), the stock sounds aren't sampled enough, and it sounds thin as hell in the upper registers of the keyboard.

That said, the JV1080/JV2080/XP-30 are still professional boards that can get some surprisingly good sounds - if you have the patience to work with and get to know them, and if you have a bunch of expansion boards. They'll need lots of EQing generally, but plenty of professionals still use them and get decent sound out of them (it was used a lot on the Xenosaga soundtrack for Playstation 2.)

If it isn't going to be your main board, then go for it if you're getting some expansions with it and if you're getting it pretty cheap. Otherwise I'd say skip it and pick up something friendlier and better, like Hypersonic 2 or Purity.

The Hyper Canvas also uses sounds from the Roland JV models, which I use in place of my Roland because it sounds cleaner and clearer.

The JV/XPs have very impressive feature lists, but the sounds themselves, and the engine they're run on, aren't very good. They were great when they were released, I imagine, but it's 2006, not 1999. :D

Edited. Got the year wrong. :dog:

I have an XV-5080, which has a much better engine than the earlier JV stuff, and I like it a lot. There are some stuff it does which is unique and I can't get with software, but there are also plenty of stuff it does which can be done better with good software.

If you need the voices and the sound palette, and you like the sounds, go for it.

I have one, its best used only with external effects ;) But can make great pads and some hard seqs.!

I hear good things about this one.

Never tried it myself but some said it was finally the replacement for stuff like the 1080/2080 etc. Wether or not that is true i have no idea.

Ooh, I'm downloading the demo. I'll give my opinion of it shortly. :D

It has a bigger screen than my JV2080 :D

Hi,

I am using a JV 1080 for a lot of years now I just love that little beast. It is sturdy as a tank and when using the structures (see manual) properly you can get very original sounds. I'm still using it regurarly.

Neg:- on the Jv 1080 there are very litlle modulation routings (only filter pitch and LFO...)
- expansion boards are advised ( but they differ in quality, I have the techno and vintage board and am happy on both )
-Only 1 (2 or 3 on the 2080) high quality effect besides a general reverb and a chorus.
- Lcd screen to edit.
- Sounds need EQ and further processing (as with every synth :? )

Pos:- It is possibly to make mixermaps for cubase (vst32 and SX3 only) or studioware panels for cakewalk that can adress EVERY parameter with sysex (I've made some mixermaps so you can always pm me)
- there are editors available (not freeware - google: sound quest)
- Extensive range of parameters.
- Clear sound
- Great sounding filters going from smooth to very raw (when used in structures)
- Different sound then a vst.
- Once used to, quite easy to edit.

Well, I can go on forever.... :) If you're making your own sounds and want smth original, that's you're synth. Don't buy it for the presets, they're awfully outdated (and they don't use the synth to it's full potential actually )

Oh, wow. ADD is impressive. I like the sound more than my XP, but if it comes with all the sounds in the demo version (dunno if the full version has more sounds) I don't think it can compete with the JV/XP's versatility.

I read on their site that the demo has 40 Mb of waves while the full version is 406 Mb.

I know my next buy then. :o :D

Great. All I need is another god damned rompler. :P

I know this thread is about JV not XV. I have an XV5080.
SRX and JV cards are what makes these Rolands worth having.
But this is a pretty expensive piece of kit. It could definitely have been a regrettable decision.

I love my XV because it's really convenient, powers up quickly, easily goes with me in my rack case, has a digital out, and it's really versatile as romplers go. I've got a couple of SRX cards that have sounds that I really enjoy using.

Like I said, I love mine, but I can easily see how it might not be so great for others, especially those who don't need a synth that's easy to take on stage, or those who are willing to use a PC live.

The XVs were how the JV/XPs should've been. Ah, man, what I'd do for an XV5080.

The 5080 is nice, no doubt, but really the sample-based sounds are not that great (great considering the size of the samples, but not so great compared to using softsamplers these days).

Again, it has some really nice synth stuff, I love a lot of the pulse wave synth pads and the guitars and harmonics are great enough for me to not want to let go, but really, it's strength is the programming, and the hardware available voice count, rather than it's engine - you can definitely get better realistic sounds, and better synth sounds elsewhere in softsynth land - allthough it does have a character or "quality" to it that is slick and seductive, that's a bit harder to emulate.

I also have mine loaded with 128meg sample ram, so it's useful as a hardware sampler player for live use...

But my days of having to use hardware and run everything live via MIDI, and really stretch the available resources by clever programming are over, so I really don't have much use for 128 voices - I'm sure the last 80 or so of the voices have probably never been used... :D

Oh, it's also nice to have 16 banks of 128 patches instantly available - and that's *before* any expansion cards... (!) (I must get a few of these one day when they're cheaper...)

Oh, and it's drum sounds suck balls. Serious balls. Just sounds like a 90's 16-bit drum machine (ie, about the worst type of plain, boring, clean drum samples you can get.) The Korg stuff is much better in this department. But then again, at least we have sample ram, and there's some cool stuff you can do once you run your own samples through the XV engine...

*makes a cross with his fingers* stay away from me man! i don't care if it's on sale, or how great it is! back! back I SAY!

:hihi:

ADD seems neat, but phrazor looks capable of doing all it can do and is a fraction of the price (of course the phrazor route means you have to provide your own sounds and instruments but there are so many good ones you already own (hq hypercanvas, etc.) and so many great freebies.. that and the guy who coded ADD partly is the author of phrazor :D

plus, a skin is coming from the monkies! can't skin that ADD thingy.. :(

it's my turn to tempt you! :P did you have a look at phrazor yet? www.sonicbytes.com. cheap cheap, free actually at the moment in beta, but it's very stable already and pre-order price is more than reasonable.
