posihfopit (or Electri-Q) when using 2 complementary hi shelves can do nice exciting
then there is IQ4 (the most underrated plugin ever), it doesn't do classic exciting but upward expansion of high frequencies can be effective too

...on that sense an EXPANDER works oppositely by expanding the dynamic, unlike compressors that reduce it

Good point - like MixTreble. There's a mighty fine [fast sounding] Transient Expander in there I use (instead of the nasty Harmonics processor) that let's you tilt the spectrum in "db/octave" to emphasize low, mid, high transients - and a cool roll off so you can emphasize high freq transients but roll them back to taste.

I agree, this kind of transient expander ( a combination of the 1st and the 2nd subunit, ....but can it be properly called "expander" ? ) let you do an extremely precise and detailed work ...and also quite versatile : i use it also for samples widely transposed up and down in a sampler afterwards...

...my only bad experience on that purpose comes from the fourth subunit ( a hi-end saturator ) that can sound very rough when the processed sanples is transposed down afterwards

PSP Mixpack is the best. You have MixTreble for highs and MixBass for lows. It's amazing. You can use the MixSaturator too. All plugins have a Limiter/saturation stage so they never clip.
Izotope Ozone has a good multiband exxiter (and you can use Izotope Trash, a distorion plugin, as a powerful harmonic exciter).
A very good sounding Exciter can be found in the old Hyperprism DX pack

Good Point - Transient Expander isn't right maybe. Transient Exciter or - the manual always works if I can't figure everything else out first...

PSP says this about MixTreble " the transient section designed for stimulating flattened transients"

It's the transient Inflator! Without messing with Harmonics [saturation/distortion]

PS - Here's something else interesting they mention in the MixTreble manual:
