I'm not saying anyone has or will, but don't rip them off, you have to take a degree of responsibility for storing non vst related stuff in your VST folders.

Wrong. You should be able to store your data any way that you see fit. You should NOT have to worry about a simple uninstall program deleting the whole folder one level up. What if it deleted two levels up or more? Having said that, wasn't the Installer done by Maxx Claster and not Imagine Line? Not sure but either way I.L. has a responsibilty to check it's new products especially from third parties. If it was Maxx's uninstaller I'm sure is was just an oversight, he's a really nice guy and Imagine Line has always treated me great. It's just an error that unfortunately cost Mike a lot of work. Sure you could say back up,back up,back up, but in no way should any blame be put on the end user if a piece of software's uninstaller is faulty.

Don't get me wrong, i'm not saying 'bad luck, it was your own fault', i'm just saying that incidents such as this are not new, therefore a degree of responsibility must be accepted for not making sure your data is safe. Of course it's not expected that uninstalling a vst demo is going to hose your system, but storing important data in a folder that also contains executables who's job it is to delete files and folders is never a good idea.

I backed up SOME of it - but most of the data I lost was for recent products and clients that are only a month or two old. Worse, I have deadlines and NONE of them can now be met. I was finished with almost ALL of them. Now I have to start over and risk losing those clients. Not to mention my own stuff that will now not see light of day that much sooner (or in this case, later).

By the way, I keep my data in those folders because they are for synths - others and my own - so not only is it convenient to have them in the same folder, but necessary in many cases.

Lastly, The demo was TWO LEVELS deep - j:\library\vst\demos\toxic III demo

EVERYTHING from j:\library\vst
was deleted. Further, I pressed CTRL-ALT-DEL when I realized what was happening and I really feel it would have deleted more than just that folder had I not stopped it - and THAT would have been catastrophic!!!

I know you are allowed your opinion and I believe in free speech and creative thought, but I would truly appreciate that you refrain from such comments - I appreciate your acceptance of my request.

That doesn't make sense...when i tried the buggy uninstaller (i backed up first, i was experimenting), it did delete my vst folder when i put it in there at root, but when i reinstalled it and put it in the E:\DAW\VSTPlugins\Synths\toxicIII folder, all it removed was the toxicIII folder, everything else was left intact. The uninstallers problem was that it deleted the folder the uninstaller resided in, nothing above that.

Yeah, it seems amazing, but that is EXACTLY what happened to me. I NEVER would have thought that a vsti installer/uninstaller would do that - and from a very ligitmate company - and I know for a fact that it was simply a programming or beta testing accident on their end. They admit that. Still, I am truly at a major loss here - and may lose some customers over this - accident or not.

I am NOT the type to take advantage. I am NOT sue-happy. I will talk with JMC and figure out what can be done, if anything.

By the way Jason, your last girlfriend was not a "Jew", she was Jewish. There is a difference in some people's eyes. Being labelled a "Jew" can be considered harsh and possibly racist by some. I, and many people I know, prefer to be referred to as Jewish.

I've had enough crap growing up being called a "Dirty Jew" and a "Bagel Jew," etc.

You would think all of this would be over in our "enlightened" society - but it doesn't.

Heck, my very best friend, when I first met he and his wife, made accidental jew cracks and didn't even realize they were doing it (ex: "Yeah, we JEWED them down and got a better price."). I let them know that they should kindly refrain from those kinds of saying - they were shocked when they realized just what they were implying.

The world turns and people hate. It's such a shame.

my ex's family got so much flac for being of jewish heritage that the father changed his last name. I am FULLY aware of the racism against them. If I said anything i assure i didnt mean it in such a way. There was a recent debate as to what is a jew -- perhaps that has somethign to do with it?

I've been doing it since I got into this whole vsti madness. I keep some samples, some .fxb's etc in my Main vsti folder out of convienience and have never had a problem. It's not something I even think about, where do I put this in case my vsti folder gets toasted. I do keep a lot of things in other folders but only out of work flow issues not out of fear. I think the one thing that has saved me all these years is that I rarely uninstall anything. Not just audio software but software in general. My point is the user should be able to keep his data any way he feels comfortable.

@Karmacomposer: you should try (have tried) an undelete program. If you haven't overwritten it the stuff is stll there. At least some of it is. From my audio partition I was just able to recover a few doddles I deleted in May this year. Try a program called "Recover my Files". It's great to have anyway.

i can also vouch for "recover my files" -- one time i had formatted a drive and recovered most of the stuff from it. Great program.

and yes, if you havent used the drive, its fine, everything can most certianly be restored.

Oddly enough I once managed to delete my entire VST folder from a couple levels in once, though I've no idea which one did it as my system froze and crashed.

I didn't have any deadlines, and aside form a hideous amount of time re-installing I had everything pretty much all backed I lucked out and it was no great loss.

Just ignore the calls for your own responsibility. It's a trend right now to never, ever admit any sympathy for someone else's tragedy. Most people who don't hang out on a PC-related site like this wouldn't even know wtf happened so it's obviously not your fault.

I'm glad IL is helping out because, naturally, I feel bad for them too: we all make mistakes sometimes but luckily we don't have the opportunity to make mistakes this far-reaching. I'm sure everyone involved has had some real, real bad hours of hair-pulling from this incident.

I would also refer you to the number of posts in HPC debating just what a "jew" is.

Also, it was an attempt to start discussion on a subject that would jeopardize the threads existance.
