Although most of the times i use my Powercore for the effects, I still want to know what VST compressors sound best? For instance, I suspect that Waves SSL compressor is quite good, so is Sonalksis SV-315. Can you guys suggest any others?

This sums it up quite nicely. I completely agree. Also add Sonalksis and PSP MasterComp to that list.

I'm also fond of the Waves Renaissance series (Ren Comp, Ren Vox).

Same from me...personally I prefer Kjaerhus, but lots of people swear by Voxengo. The only reason I don't use Voxengo is that for some reason I can't get on with the GUI...just turns me off for an odd reason, but some of his comps are good sonically.

The only other one I'd throw in is OtiumFX beatpuncher. Not a general compressor, really, but very useful if you want some odd waveshaping, pumping, scratchy, weird dynamics on drums. Also comes ready-made with a sidechain and a handy selection of Eq filters you can use from within the plugin. If you want to compress aggressively and make industrial type drums - this would be your first resort even above Kjaerhus.

However, for sheer smoothness and a bit of character thrown in and general compression duties - Kjaerhus and Voxengo all the way.

EDIT: apparently URS has some good compressors (but it seems you have to like iLoks to use his plugins...which is why I won't ever buy them, unfortunately). They're not cheap, but price doesn't usually bother me...iLoks do though.

Kjaerhus looks very pretty and curiously that makes me want to have it more than any other compressor I've seen....I'm sure it sounds good too.
Three shall be the number of the counting

And the number of the counting shall be three.

Sonalksis or Waves Rcomp to me

Actually, my favourite is still the TC Native Bundle's Compressor/De-esser - so I guess that's redundant for you!

I've been using Kjaerhus a lot now, Sonalksis is beautiful...what the guys say here. I'm evaluating the Waves SSL plugins right now, and I'm not sure if I can really validate them yet or recommend them above the aforementioned. I get the feeling they're over-hyped. But I don't use an SSL regularily either. :scared:

That's like asking how firm do you like your pillow.

Personally the classic compressor by Kjaerhus doesn't sound too great to me (compared to a Waves C1).
And I thought the Voxengo demos I tried had artifacts such as clipping and a strange release curve. (Although there was an interesting one I think he made once that made everything "fluffier" that I'd like to try again.)
