Throughout the net I often find two types of VSTs. Ones that have many samples included as well as ones that don't supply any samples, but instead allow the user to manipulate the sound of certain tracks. I was wondering if there is any formal name difference between the two because I'm trying to find the VST's with samples included.

----If by samples you mean presets, then you should check the search listings/descriptions of synths. They usually tell how many presets it comes packaged with. The other kind of vsts that, "allow the user to manipulate the sound of certain tracks", are effects no ? Your wording was kinda weird, so I'm just trying to translate, then answer yer questions.

I think maybe he means sample-based synthesizers like HG Forunes' pad and texture synths or KongAudio stuff. Yes there is a difference between them but I believe they're simply refered to as synths anyway, with the distinction made in the description alone.

BUT: then there's plugins like Ultiamate Sound Bank and Sample Tank. Those can be referred to as Sound Modules and this is probably more of what you're after. They come with great sounds:

Nope, the official distinction is between VSTi's and VST effects.

VSTi = VST instrument, can create sound by itself. Often called synth, which is short for synthesizer. Some do it with samples (they are called samplers/romplers) but most do it without.

VST effects alter incoming sound. In general they don't generate sound themselves, so they are not instruments or synths.

A sample is basically a piece of audio, a preset is the stored settings of an effect or an instrument.
And just to confuse you ;-) : a sample can be part of a preset if the instrument utilize samples for sound generation.

Someday I'll look back on all this and laugh... until they sedate me.
