VSTis as good as hardware? Similar to Access Virus Quality?

Ok here's my take with Sytrus. Of course it'll be very different since it's near to impossible to replicate a patch, but I tried to mimmic the key points:

-phaser that kicks in in the middle
-not sharp attack, so surely there's something in the volume envelope but I can't replicate it
-same with the filter env, I think the envs and more specifically the env *curves* are one of the most important things in a patch. You can switch to other filters and not hear the difference, but try to change env curves and it'll have a big impact, especially for short arp notes like this.

I recently was listening closely to a simple zebra2 bass preset I was working on, trying to get a certain result and the amp/filter envelopes attack curve made a big difference in the sound. I was surprised how much just a change in the curve of the attack slope made to the perception of the sound.

Keyfollow on filter cutoff makes a big difference on the filter sweep too

The attack envelopes on Virus are linear. But you can route them to themselves to make them logarithmic.

Yeah tumface, I read that in an SOS article! Putting an envelope to control the envelope made it exponantial.

I'd think that the env attack is linear (in %) and the release logarithmic, as it's often the case.
But we all know the future (or present) are custom curves in multipoint envelopes.

maybe its best to first try to make a virus sound without effects, just dry osc's and filters, when they match, then go on with the effects. Would be interesting which of the softsynth's osc and filter are closest to a virus. Fabfilter ?

For sure, if someone wants to devote.. because doing it by ear is impossible.

Now, no need to bother with dry oscillators, the Virus shapes are floating on the net. You just tell the shape #, and it can be found back. Unless it's morping between 2 shapes of course.

Agreed.
The original Virus riff was behind a load of fx too, so I was attempting the sound of the original.

What I find interesting with all of the postings here is that there are clear differences in the sounds, but IMHO the alternatives sound just as usable and convincing in the context of a mix.

I'd love a Virus C, but not enough to shell out all that cash when there's cheap/free VSTIs that can do the job.

Yes, I think I was dicking about with the resonance to make the open bits sound sweeter. I didn't quite catch it in the right place on the way down.
