Recording Guru in Cubase (NOOB ALERT)

Hello friendly KVRians,

I'm a little confused about recording Guru in Cubase, which I just purchased. With all of my other vsts, I will record the midi file and it is played in cubase just fine...However, Guru plays its own internal midi file - this works fine until mixdown of the track, at which point there is nothing recorded.

I know I can drag midi files from the pattern buttons in cubase - however, the fact that I can automate pattern changes in Guru leads me to believe that there must be another way to do this...

Can anyone help?

AFAIK there are 3 ways record stuff using GURU:

1: the "normal" way, where you just trigger each pad from a midi track in Cubase

2: create patterns in GURU and then export them ( or drag and drop ) to your midi drumtrack in Cubase.

However, when you export patterns to midi, you will lose a lot of information from the patterns like Repeat, Pitch or Filter.

3: trigger the patterns from your sequencer using the c-1 up to c1 keys, this way you will hear exactly what you programmed, no information gets lost.

maybe you can also use "scenes" for that, but I guess that's mainly for live stuff

So with method 1, you play the midi note corresponding to the pattern and it will record the audio in mixdown? This sounds way too simple I will try this when I get home from work.

Do you have to hold down the midi note for the length of time it runs for, or does a short note trigger a pattern indefinitely?

This is exactly what I've been trying to figure out (only in Sonar)!

More info pleeeze! I feel like a dumbass, I've had the demo for a month and still can't figure out how to make a *song*. I'm not interested in jamming/live triggering, I want to compose.

Believe me, I've tried! Drag-n-drop from the pads gives some wild results in Sonar, none of them good though. I'm kinda new to midi, but I get the iidea of "painting in" with the notes of the pads I guess...

I haven't tried in a while, I'll look the manual over again tonight. Any specific page numbers would be great!

All my other software (Sonar, Acid, P5, Live) I've picked up the basics without needing the manual. I can work fine within Guru (and like it a lot!), I just can't figure out how to put it all into a song structure.

When dragging the pads to the midi track, it plays doubly from both the track and within Guru itself (so it's twice as loud!). Ignoring host temp or whatever didn't fix it... oi.

Exporting a Pattern to your sequencer
If your sequencer supports drag and drop of MIDI files, you
can export Patterns directly to your sequencer's arrange page
by clicking and dragging the relevant Pattern key.

Sonar supports d&d, and this does not work! For one thing, the patterns come up short for some reason, so you can't make a Groove Clip out of them to loop them, plus as I said there's no way to make Guru not play along with it, doubling the volume (that I can find at least...).

1.Make your patterns using the guru sequencer (this is the best feature btw, I would probably go for battery if you just plan to use your hosts piano roll)
2.Assign your patterns to scenes
3.Trigger your scenes using your hosts piano roll

Actually, you dont even have to drag and drop anything.

Just select the pattern in GURU, highlight a section of measures in sonar, and bounce it to audio. YOu'll get a perfectly loopable audio clip that you can change into a groove clip.

mr selfdestruct: what you need to do is create an empty MIDI region in Cubase's arrange page of the length that you want Guru to export. Cubase tries to be clever, and if there's no MIDI region assigned to the instrument, it thinks there is nothing to export. If you create an empty MIDI region, it tricks it in to exporting Guru's tracks properly.

jamester: you can either do what Keyman_Sam says, or check the "Ignore Host Transport and Tempo" box in Guru. That box will stop Guru's transport from starting when the host starts, so you won't get double triggering.

Sounds great...but Sonar's telling me there's nothing there to bounce (and it's right). Something's missing here?

Makes sense to me, but it's not working! (this is sooo frustrating!). If I assign to C3, I just get a kick drum. If I assign to C5, I get nothing.

I like Guru, but why is this so hard???

I don't know Sonar, but try inserting an empty MIDI clip in the length you want to render.
