just ran into this thread...
is this for the first solo songs, as in the first song you wrote completely yourself, or the first song you wrote for your band (in which case several other people wrote their own parts for your song)?

I think this is basically for whatever song you ever wrote/helped write for the first time. :D

that will be good for a laugh (or torture!) i should still have some live tapes of my very first band in high school, which will have that song. i should still have my first solo attempt around somewhere too, which was so lo-fi i was done with a cheep ancient mic and a dual casette for overdubbing.

i'll have to dig around my old tapes this weekend and see what i can dredge up.

Whichever ones are funniest and/or have the best story behind them and/or used the coolest obscure old gear. ;)

And thanks for the kind words everyone! I've got piles more of this old stuff. I could go on and on (but will stop myself here :hihi:)

Borogove, cool! Salwa2, cool and scary! (Another famous South Park quote comes to mind.)
Borogove wrote:Both tracks feature my discovery that you can't hit a wrong note if you stick to the black keys only.
You and Momo would have gotten along famously! ;) (Don't hit me Momo! Just kidding!!!!)

this is one of my first songs, this was like 4 years ago!!!!

When I was born the grammophone was hardly ever put to use anymore.. How weird is that. It was all casettes.. I wish we'd stick to one medium for once.

Gimme some more. :-o
Definitely some nice beats in this.
The mixing isn't perfect, but still nice job!

Damn... Some of these tracks really bring me back.

Couple more comments:

-----------
BOROGOVE: (Impulsive) I love this one! Very 'amiga-with-casset-deck' sounding for sure. But the track as a whole is what matters. If I had ever made something this cool come out of my commodore setup, I'd would have been dancing in the streets. You have every right to be proud of this one, all-things-considered.

-----------
SALWA2: lots of nostalgia there. You're so right with the comments about actually writing songs, rather than spending time buying gear. Puts this whole VSTi-acquiring fascination into perspective.

Thanks for all the comments, guys. Here's another one :D :

It's pretty scarry and funny experience for me, listen to this stuff. Geee, there were times when i didn't have PC computer - just me, my bass guitar, TR-505, C64 and Samsung stereo with karaoke input... Ok, I just got my payment for last month, time to buy something:D

biggity bump bump. Ugo still has to post his track! :hihi: And NotTheCommonDose said he would also.

Well, this is actually the first time I upload a song for the public to hear, so that's two pieces of cake for me :D

This song was done when I was studying in Computer Assisted Sound Design. It's the first song I ever completed on a DAW for a soundtrack to my final project.

Featuring my famous (well, in-school famous) lyric; "You've got all the things I want when I'm on fire".

Enjoy. The song was eventually titled "A Song Noth Worth Singing" (although I sung it in the end) ;)

What a great thread!

This is not my first tune, but since i can't find any other older song...

I did this song in 2000 using Acid (no pun intended), back in the day when i had nothing better to do. :P

Basically it's a mix of a classical piano song with some drum loops, Prodigy loops and also starring Homer Simpson (you've been warned!). :-o

i am amazed at the quality of the tracks people are posting...and thats in terms of composition, execution, mixing and recording! i cant believe these are your first tracks. :o

but with all that good, must come some bad...and i feel it is up to me to bring the world back into balance. i have dredged my lake of ancient mixdown cassettes and i bring you some crapolicious gems from the depths.

.......................

here is a live version of the first song i wrote with my first band. this was recorded at my high school talent show in either 1990 or early 91. i think it was recorded either from a cassette deck in the back of the auditorium or from a vhs camcorder. i did what i could to make the mp3 audible.

king of the hill
yes, that was a 17 year old ugo on vocals and bass.

but wait...there's more! i told you i had to bring the world back into balance and one bad teenage attempt at a political song isnt enough to do the job. besides, now that my shame is on hold, im getting a kick out of this nostalgia trip...and im dragging you all along for the ride. :troll:

edit: i ran some noise reduction, eq, and compression on all these today in the hopes of getting them more listenable.

.........................

this next one is my first solo recording from 1993. its really more of a spoken word thing than anything else. it was recorded by using a dual cassette deck and overdubbing the hell out of it. if i remember correctly, the mic was an ancient little consumer thing from the 70's. the instruments are bass, vocals, and junk i had hanging around for percussion.

saturday-game.mp3

...........................

moving on to 1994, i finally got a drum machine and a 4 track. the drum machine was a used korg DDD-5 and the 4 track was a *very* used tascam porta5. this one has bass, the DDD-5, and features hammered dulcimer and abysmal gothboy lyrics. the song ends a bit abruptly because thats all the tape i had left when recording it.

leave me to my dreams

............................

another one from 94. a better sounding recording this time, and its mostly spoken word again. the chord in the background was a bass chord run through a looping delay. the sound effects are vocal noises made through delay, distortion, and pitch shifting. features: my first bad experiments into doing punch-ins.

doll

...........................

this one was originally written at the same time as the previous two, hence the continuing theme of 'cheating/leaving girlfriend' lyrics. this version is a remake of it that i did in 96 or 97. the drums this time are from an alesis SR-16. the 4 track was a better tascam this time, but the guy at the controls was just as bad at working them. note the glitch somewhere around half way through or so...yet another instance of the original tape getting munched at one point or another. man, i hated tape.

cold

edit: the one synth sound on here was from a yamaha SY35 that was triggered by the drum machine. im not sure where that constant mid-high pitch is coming from.

..............................

and now, as a finale, i give you a gem that was lost for many years and i literally just found it today while listening to my old tapes looking for those other tracks. this is a goofy cover of johnny cash's folsom prison blues, done with an 8 string bass, guitar, the SR-16, and the DDD-5 through distortion. johnny is probably rolling in his grave that i found this one.

folsom prison blues

..............................

of course i have plenty more crapolicious songs from my past, including several early instrumental attempts i made with my first keyboard, a used yamaha SY35, and no sequencer, and several more awful songs with awful lyrics, but i suspect you all have had more than enough torture for today.

you can all breathe easy now, the world is now back in balance.
you're welcome. :hihi:
