Would you mind not sidetracking this thread with your remorseless self promotion. Some of us are interested in viruses.aciddose wrote:i figured if we're talking about filters, i'd better do one where the filter's quality shows clearly. you can hear some crunchy/noisy bits when i sweep up, i havent compensated things entirely yet. i'll want to do some extra stuff to remove aliasing, and the crunchyness will be gone with it.
anyway though, i doubt the virus can do anything even remotely like this. i do not think very many individuals would be able to come up with a modular analog system to reproduce this type of sound either. it is fairly unique to xhip, as xhip uses a truly novel filter design.

bones, i cant produce a pwm sound quite as nice as yours. the complex waveform has a good bit to do with it, but the filter you're using sounds alright as well. do you know anything technical about it, should i bother asking?
VSTis as good as hardware? Similar to Access Virus Quality?

Who? This is a software forum and I'm learning plenty here, thanks.

All I know is that I've never heard any synth at any price that sounds as good [for around 10% of the CPU usage of xhip to boot]. You would have to ask Richard Hoffman about it, I only know how to use this stuff. The technicalities leave me cold [which is probably why you wax lyrical about the DX7 and I fuckin' hate 'em].bones, i cant produce a pwm sound quite as nice as yours. the complex waveform has a good bit to do with it, but the filter you're using sounds alright as well. do you know anything technical about it, should i bother asking?

When I looking for soft-synth threads in forums, everywhere I hear "Virus", "Virus the B E S T !!!". I think, that VIRUS is not something that will be the apocalypse in music (maybe just in trance). "virus'ers" not listening to other people arguments.
I think the Best are: Linplug Albino 3, ABSynth 3, Linplug Blue, Image-Line Sytrus 2, And Sonic Charge MicroTonic (for Synthesized drums).
If you are interested in full-software sound, and having some time, go to http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=145415 , listen to tune and leave comments. All in Software.

(not quoting anyone in particular, I've heard this a zillion times, and quite a lot in this thread)its own character
Music has its own character. Presets have their own character. Synths just have their own limitations.
BONES, you're only making fun of yourself with that clip you knowOne synth to rule them all

You're not kidding - I've just downloaded xhip, and the pwm ain't too great, is it? Nowhere near as good as a Virus'.bones, i cant produce a pwm sound quite as nice as yours.
The oscillator pitch doesn't appear to go anywhere near as high as the Virus (and most other synths) and I can clearly hear aliasing at their extreme range. Also, if you set osc mod to full depth, it all goes to shit, even at 96khz - this, I discover within 2 minutes of trying it out.
The filters sound OK, but nothing special.
Really, I'm surprised you're trying to tout xhip as a Virus-beater, when it clearly has a long way to go before it comes anywhere near as usable?

but 3 gb samples and presets for just 20 euros you can not go wrong !!
i think i don't have to traduct ( my german is really poor)Es werden die Wellenformen des Access Virus, Waldorf Wave und ENSONIQ SQ80 mitgeliefert !!!
put the virus in the garbage end of the story

It may not sound at all like a Virus (and actually I don't care about Virus to be honest) but xhip is very capable, judging from the demo audios, and I'm looking forward to a usable GUI...
aciddose you're doing a great job with xhip but I think maybe you shouldn't try to chime in every thread with a sound of your baby, some people find it annoying I guess.
Anyway this thread is great

I don't think any of us are trying to claim that the Virus is "the best". It deserves a fair shake though, I think, as a solid VA synth and worthy of anyone's consideration who is looking for one. With 4osc per voice, 2 filters, 3 LFOs (with 68 waveform shapes), the standard variable oscillator types + 60ish spectral waves, an extensive modulation matrix, vocoder and a wide variety of other effects (including one of the best built-in phaser effects I have heard), it holds its own as another solid offering in the VA arena. It does have its own character sound, though. Some of this is partially due to the fact that there are multiple saturation and distortion stages along its signal path, both before and after the filter. I suspect that most of the preset banks like to drive those hard, which no doubt helps fuel people's impression that it's really only good for that dark, distorted, in-your-face signature sound that so many attribute to the Virus.Fi.Re. wrote:When I looking for soft-synth threads in forums, everywhere I hear "Virus", "Virus the B E S T !!!". I appreciate aciddose's perspective though. I also dislike "feature creep" and how it is almost inevitible that most companies will try to cram so much into what originally started out as a more elegant, streamlined product in order to keep up sales. The Nord Lead is my preferred hardware VA overall, as I like Clavia's more elegant approach to synths as musical performance instruments. I use software instruments and effects for most everything else (though I love the JD-990 for pads and atmospheres). It has become pretty clear though that VSTi's have surpassed most hardware synthesizers in power and flexibility at this point, and at a fraction of the cost. With instruments like z3ta+, Rhino, Albino, Zebra, etc... a sound designer would never need to touch a hardware synth ever again. I still like to use both, but perhaps that will change in the future as controller surfaces get better and all of these hardware instruments have been modelled.

2Tronam:I Think you right, because of variety of instruments to choose (both Hardw. and VSTis), everybody can find some for his shape. But I don't understand all that "Virus is BEEEST!!! Everything else - f***ing s*it".
It make me laugh because, i used Virus HW, and sometimes using Virus Indigo TDM. But, I prefer VST hosts (Nuendo3), and flexibility of VSTis.

No vsti synth sounds like a Virus. That's true.
But it's also true that the Virus doesn't sound like Vanguard, like Wasp XT, like Absynth, like Xhip, etc

phattslagg; i never said xhip is any better than a virus, i only said a virus can not make most of the sounds xhip can. also, you probably dont have a clue how to use it, i'm not really going to take any comments about it seriously when i know you're using it purly in an attempt to prove to yourself how bad it is. sure it can explode at certain settings, but the thing is that a virus doesnt even let you go that far. everything can be adjusted in only a moment, if so desired. i have things set up the way i prefer. it is notable to mention in those situations with the xmod, an analog synth will also produce noise, would you like some examples? so on and so fourth, dont be such a c**t, i havent said how terrible a virus sounds in some situations at all
its hilarious how angry people get if you say one bad thing about their precious virus. i suppose you've bought one, right? and now since you've got a sore wallet you'll do anything to justify it. perhaps you have some kind of regret or jealousy?
if i really wanted a virus i'd go out and buy one, i dont want one though
i know this post will probably incite more personal/other attacks due to bias or complete misinterpretations, but that wont bother me.
anyway, i havent be plugging for xhip, or forcing it on anyone. i've just posted some mp3s made with it, i never even suggested anyone use it, or posted any links to somewhere you can download it. to be honest if you're going to even consider comparing it to a virus, please stay away and never even touch it. if you were curious enough based upon the demos to try it out, that was on your own whim, so please dont bitch at me.
the only one mention i've ever made of anything that might be interpreted as a claim xhip is better than a virus was my choice of title on a single mp3 file. "virus eats xhip's balls" perhaps i ment this affectionatly?

Not at all. I can afford it, I find it to be good at what it does, with acceptable limitations. Some of the older parts of it are nothing special against some more recent products, granted, but the newer oscillator and filter models stand up admirably.aciddose wrote:

...and I'm not angry at all (??) - I just found it mildly amusing that whilst you have littered this thread with suggestions that the Virus doesn't measure up to xhip, it only takes a few minutes of simple testing to establish that it not only measures up, it surpasses it in many fundamental ways.
