Yeah it's really frustrating for me, too. This is a very good suggestion -- probably what's reasonable at this stage would be to have a setup page for VSTs that merely describes the early state and mentions you can set a path in the Preferences window for when you're ready to try that. My only small hesitation right now is that at this stage, with the amount of problems being seen, I'm almost more interested in gathering information about what's going on.

That way, too, i coudl be able to make a "beta test" folder with just a doen of "known to work" plugins, and have fun with sequitur...
I've had this page up -- it's a public wiki so people are welcome to share their VST experiences. I have no problem at all tracking what doesn't work, but it's not yet reasonable to track what does work (at least for me, acting in any sort of official capacity). The issue is that, of the problems I've had reported, so far they've either been fixed in the 1.0.3 or I can't reproduce them, with the majority falling into the can't reproduce category. I test on dozens and dozens of VSTs and things have been working pretty flawlessly here, which is obviously not the experience many people are having. So I'm not about to begin making claims on what will work. There's clearly an environmental issue I need to track down.

thanks much,
eric

By the way, i have downloaded the latest beta, and if i didn't yet really "tried" the host, i was glad to see way better "welcoming steps for the average user" : a clean uninstaller, less mess in the system, no more crashing when installing/scanning(well, i made a new vst folder with few vst, so this might also be the cause), and enhanced tutorials to understand better the way of working, etc.
Now it really makes me in a good possitive moood to try out what seems to be a very interesting software ;)

hi
any news on this one yet, exh?

i am very impressed with it, and am looking forward to the re-activation of the audio stuff. :D

We're hard at work on the next beta. :) There may also be another small bug fix patch in the next couple days, depending on how things go.

Right now we have prioritized improving the MIDI environment over doing more work on the audio side of things, since that seemed to be what most people were interested in. We would love to hear any specific areas of interest that you or anyone has, though; one of our goals with the early beta is to see what people find compelling or limiting in order to better focus our development.

Personally I'd rather it was purely midi - there's enough audio stuff out there already and I'd like to be able to do without asio and all that.

I agree, really isn't a blazingly good and comprehensive MIDI-only sequencer out there. Multitrack MIDI/audio sequencers are a dime a dozen.

for my needs I would only be interested in Sequitur if it were a stripped-down (but powerful modular bars&pipes-like features) MIDI-only sequencer/live automatable MIDI processor that can run as a VST plugin like Sonicbytes ERA for quickly generating interesting interactive MIDI data .. I'm honestly swamped with too many amazing audio & VST hosts (.. eXT, REAPER, Phrazor, Live, etc. .) =]

Post

To my point, it is a bit the same : Sequitur is interesting me mainly for the midi features and the global concept.
But there is 2 things to take in consideration :

1- letting the audio part "down" is worth only if Sequitur can do like Ext or Phrazor = run as a host into the host. If it is only a midi sequencer with no conenxion to the audio hosts, it is not that good !

2- I mightn't be experienced enough (i am also drowning in to softwares : there is so many amazing stuff at the moment that i want to use !!! :) ), but the midi concept of Sequitur seems quite unique and very interesting : if the developpers can put as many inventivity on the audio side than on the midi side, it might worth to see how can the audio side of the application can look like !! (i can't even figure out what a modular/algorithmic audio app could be, but at least it osunds nice !)

So: Yes, like many of you, i'm already bloated with daw, but this doesn't mean Sequitur doesn't worth taking a look, and even more : keeping an eye on it, closely following every releases ! ;)

Why not? It is dead easy to use loopback drivers. And not that hard to set up sync. The biggest benefit would be simplicity if it were to be a plugin, except most (if not all) hosts won't sync transport to a plugin's whim, so you couldn't use Sequitur as your main work centre. Other plugin benefits like host automation wouldn't really apply to MIDI sequencer, and you're ultimately still using two windows either way.

On my system I don't even need loopback drivers - hence my interest 8)

Hey I think you meant "sexified."

Drop me a line if you want to catch up.

Brilliant, sexified, a hot item, the crutch upon which BeOS MIDI rested... it's all good  i will certainly drop you a line. i should have added that Dianne is also brilliant/sexified; didn't mean to leave her out!

Just to sum up our current direction:

We think the idea of turning sequitur into a plugin is very interesting, but we acknowledge that it's not something that makes sense right now -- i.e. it wouldn't be a very interesting plugin without a lot of the features that have yet to be implemented. This item will stay there and we hopefully will get continued feedback on how important it is to how many people, so we can reassess things when we're in a better position to investigate it.

As for being purely midi, we still intend to support basic audio sequencing -- if for no one else then at least for me, so I can get my girlfriend to lay down some vocals. However that's not at all where the emphasis is, we intend to spend a minor amount of time making it happen. You can of course completely ignore the audio stuff, since sequitur's roots are as a MIDI-only sequencer there's no concession to audio projects. For example, sequitur uses just the standard .MID file format, it won't create a directory for each song assuming you'll be recording audio.

Keep up the good work :)

I'm certainly interested in a plugin format.

Personally I don't need it as a plugin.

Sequitur will definitely always be able to work without having ASIO. As Eric said, some kind of audio support will continue to be integrated in various flavors, as we figure out good approaches, but we really see MIDI as core to the product.

I am definitely interested in taking the approach of focusing on a great MIDI experience, and then integrating audio in to that -- in fact a lot of our longer-term plans for "MIDI" raise some very interesting ways to approach audio integration. Also, purely from a compositional perspective, I like the idea of embracing the more malleable world of MIDI, and then figuring out how we can present a similar kind of user interaction in an audio environment.

But first, there is the 1.0 version. :)

No problem, I'm used to it; Eric gets all the hot ones. *pout*
