samples of a big metal rattling gate

These are samples of our big metal gate. Variations of pushing in and pulling out the latch and pushing in the entire gate open and closing it. I used two rode NT1-A mics with an EMU 1616m sound card and recorded directly into cubase at 24bit 44.1Khz

I like the idea of samplesnippets site so I'm trying to funnel people there.

----There's one in there that sounds very 3-D, and lots of cool clicks to be had, thanks for sharing these :)

thanks for the comment Jeff. Which sample is the 3-D one?

Post

----Well, after listening to them a bit louder (in the daytime here) they are pretty much all stereo to one degree or another, so about 2/3 of them sound pretty 3-D with the sound all the way up :)
----Not sure about that gate though, sounds like it either needs to be adjusted, or at least oiled, some kind of trouble getting that thing open or was that just for dramatic effect ? :hihi:

heh yeah that gate needs a bit a maintenance. Its about 20 feet long and 4 feet high and it fully drags on the asphalt.

Post

----Well, sometimes disfunctional objects (especially metal ones) make the coolest sounds anyways :) On that note, I'd like to hear some ancient 1980's auto-matic garage door opener that hasn't been serviced since Reagan was in office, those would make great samples for sure :hihi:

my grandparents have one

Maybe movies will now stop using that same 50 year old sample that is in every movie with a squeeky old door!

Hey cheers Genetic!

Some of these will work great as high end sweeteners for big explosing hits and stuff. Very useful.

----Tell'em I said, "Hi", when they ask why yer futzing with their garage door for an hour ? :hihi:
----Someday I'll get a minidisc recorder and stereo mic and get all the samples I always wanted, but until then, anyone who posts anything good gets hounded for more as their reward for sharing ha-ha. Thanks again for the fence samples, and I'll keep an eye out for future stuff you do :)

This is a great site! Even without using these samples, I really like listening to them... I especially love the fence sounds, the metallic sounds and the wheather sounds. Thanks a lot!

tee boy, Jeff, Okke, and Chase (maybe) thanks for checking them out. I got depressed for a couple of days because of a sampling predicament, but I've since been able to deal with the problem. I've got two more weeks before going back to school so I'm going to be a sampling maniac until then.

Post

Did you use any noise reduction software? Nice recordings!

Post

No noise reduction. The reason why the noise is so low is mainly due to the mics. The nt1a produce around 5 dB's of self noise which is the pretty much the lowest you'll find for mics. Also the the preamps on the 1616m sound-card aren't too shabby neither.

Thanks for the comments :)

----Cool, glad to hear you sorted out your problem, and that more samples might be coming along in the future :)
