Gotta go with Absynth 2 here.. Still havent bought my upgrade to 3 but looks like I better get on that while the sale is still going haha.
Other than that though, Ive pretty much weaned myself off virtual instruments nowadays except for Absynth/Crystal/PPGWave and the occasional Attack drumkit.. Once I figure out Ultrabeat though, and my Korg ER-1 runs out of fun stuff, Attack will probably go bye bye for good..

Tracked the FF8 DLS down, and it's very good. Thank you.Ildon wrote:I'm having a lot of fun with Fruity's LSD and my FF8 DLS. It's like having an SC88 in my computer that only takes up 5% CPU with each instance.

Ok, lets rephrase the question.
What is your desert Island vst?
The one VST that finds it's way into almost every project is a freebie,....the almighty Synth1.
There...off the fence. Boy that feels good!

I think it would have to be Albino.
It has very deep capabilities, yet isn't really all that difficult to get into - being well designed & well laid out.
& it sounds good for Basslines, pads, leads - whatever you want.

Mine would be Jamstix.
Why?
It is more than just an "instrument".
All the other VSTi's I use are just that... instruments, I play them, but if I didn't have them I could substitute another VSTi and although the timbre or quality may be different, what I played wouldn't really be.
Jamstix is not just an "instrument", but a "player" as well.
It produces drum parts that I would not be able to play either manually or program in with my limited drum skills.
Using loops and other pattern based drum tool s would take a long time for me to get it to sound as varied and improvised as Jamstix and even then I'd probably not do as good a job.
Every other VSTi I have I could replace with another if it wasn;t availabel and get a decent enought piano, string sound etc. But unlike the rest, with Jamstix it is not only about the sound that it produces but the performace as well.

WusikStation definately.
Works great for soundset playback, works great for making all sorts of sounds, infinitely extensible with your own sounds, easy to fiddle with and get results, low CPU hit.
Sometimes I might replace some sounds with ST2 soundsets or something else, but alot of the time I'm working with 1 or more WusikStations from the very start of the composing process until right at the very end.
Regards
Caleb

This is interesting...almost everybody has a different choice...this tells a lot on the diversity out there and the personal taste...
My favorite is without a doubt reaktor...the first time i saw this thing (before i had a computer and still was with hardware) i went
I immediatly said to myself "man i have to get this,i could create anything i want,i could create the synth of my dream
"
it was reaktor 2 i think at that moment...
now at 5 i'm using the synth of my dream
ps:im still working on it though...

Xoxos' Steps, for constructing unique loops out of individual drum hits, for example, low tabla w/ electronic hats, etc. Also it can make very interesting basslines if you know how to use it right. I love that you can both reverse the sample and adjust the start and end time, nudgeing one sound over another in the coolest way so they fit together.
sfSynth2. I believe the same guy who offers Ultrasonique puts this one out. The addition of chorus, delay and pitch modulation options puts it a step above sfz I think, except sfz will play some soundfonts that sfSynth2 won't.
FearkillerX2, of course. I always heap praise on that one. So easy to make cool sounds on and just about the best-sounding SynthEdit ever.
