Looking for simple audio editor to make jams more concise

I usually set up everything so i can record to wav and then just do a little rough 'mastering' on the resulting stereo file.

i am pretty happy with the results, but there are always a few moments of silence or parts were i lose track of what's going on for a second and have to fix a few vst parameters to get rid of minor annoyances.
these parts i'd like to edit out later on, as well as the occasional audio drop-out due to cpu-maxing/buffer underrun...

the hosts for which i own licenses: FL producer, tracktion 1.6 NFR, audiomulch, eXT.
FL often has trouble with large wav files and if i stream from disk it doesn't show a waveform, which makes it hard to track down silent parts. tracktion has that render bug, which makes me hesitant to use it. audiomulch doesn't seem fit for audio editing and in eXT i mostly use the main window, so i don't know much about its audio editing abilities.

with all the talk about reaper i got motivated again to finally look for a more hassle-free solution to doing quick fixes to my wav-jams, but to be honest the full license will be out of my spending range.

i don't need many bells and whistles - just resource and user-friendly cutting and crossfading of wav parts. there are so many things i am in the process of learning constantly, already, so although it may sound lazy that's the main reason for wanting a fairly 'for-dummies' kind of software and not something, yet again, with a steep learning curve.

thank you. while of course usually one should go and take a good look at what's on offer, sometimes it's good to have an imho very reliable community which can support with their knowledge. cause i really don't have the nerve to go through all the possible audio-editing software out there. one short post like that is all i need - it saves me time, doesn't take much too much time for others to post and is an opinion i'm willing to trust.
