i love every computer that does the job,mac or pc
but ill get a macbook pro
Honestly I was dead set on getting a PC desktop just to have certain PC only apps like Energy XT and Audio Mulch, and running a macbook pro as a laptop, but a smoking deal appeared on a dual 2.5 G5.
I'm going to end up installing windows on the macbook instead..... wondering if NI and other Plugs I run will be OK with dual platform licenses on the same machine?

Even Apple have had a quad-core G5 since late last year and BOXX Technologies have an 8-core workstation that has been shipping for 6 months or so. As usual, Apple are a day late and a dollar short but you dumb-arses still fall for their marketing bullshit.
LOL. You're really reaching this time. You're so determined to point out that Apple ain't all that that you use Apple as a counterpoint?

And how long have HP and IBM been offering dual Woodcrest workstations, exactly?

Oh, and the Apple Tax is negative on this one.

it was for the kick of building a computer that is worth more than a yer of rent(without any addon cards, jsut the drives and ram from apple)

base is 2499 us 4*2ghz, 1 gig ram, 250 gig HD

I'll still wait to se if they decide to use core2duo in the MBP, if not in one month max I'll get a MBP, if yes, i'll wait and get a core2duo
You should see the core2duo soon...I've heard next month for PCs...so Apple should be around the same time. They like to be "first" usually.... On the MacBook Pro I would guess...but not the MacBook.

Unless, of course, I wasn't having a go at Apple but at the dipshit who got excited over something that has, in one form or another, been around for a year or more.
Anyway, I couldn't price an HP xw9300, it appears they have been EOL'd and you can't price workstations on HP's site anyway. Had a quick look at IBM but I couldn't work out what the f**k was going on with their store. It seems you can get the same workstaion at about 20 different prices. But I was offerred an ex-demo xw9300 for Au$4000 recently which is cheaper than a MacBook Pro.
A decent MacPro, spec'd to my liking, will cost me Au$11,174. With a 500mb SATA HDD costing an extra Au$659 it all adds up rather quickly. I spec'd up a similar BOXX box and, with international pricing, it came out more than a KORG microX cheaper at Au$9465 [today's exchange rate at www.xe.com] but it has 2 x RAID-0 pre-configured. RAID wasn't even an option at the Apple Store. To be fair, the Mac has better graphics but they exceed my needs more than somewhat. Add a monitor to your Mac and its around the same price as a NextCom box and not half as clever or convenient.
But of course, if you wanna believe whatever you read on the internet, go right ahead and don't bother checking for yourself. Dumb-arses!

I'm not impressed with the xeon specs
dual core 2 duo yes, but those wanky xeons are a dissapointment

I'm sure they'll get core 2 duos later but you'd have to be mad to buy the xeon machines. It feels like they're just sticking them in there to conform to Intel contract specifications

Except that if you want multiple processors, i.e. dual-dual core, you have to go Xeon. Core 2 Duo will only be dual-core, unless Intel have changed the way they do everything. I'm completely disinterested, I'm an AMD man all the way.

Well I finally got curious about my next PC and went and priced it out - I can get it right now for Au$2014. That's a brand-new everything except for the 2nd HDD which I will take from my current workstation as its only a month or so old [or it was when I put the thing in for a warranty fix]. Its also about Au$1200 cheaper than when I priced it at the beginning of the year, or almost the difference between a PC and a Mac of similar specification.

Bones, do the math, please.
I was about to change my board and CPU but €1900 the entry setup is just too sweet.
It's a pitty i'm allergic to OSX and my current chassis is way better and cooler looking(geez i'm becoming a mac dude already :scared:)than the Mac pro... that thing with the fruit name and logo also is a turn off to me
but i'm used to it since i own FLS.

Does anyone know if later on we can change the machine specs as we do with normal PC, like geting more RAM or different CPU's???

Let's see how PC builder answer this... it could be great.

oh calling those CPU "wanky XEON" it's cool, 4mb cache, 1.33ghz fsb... they wank smoking furiously IMO.

well, they're called Kentsfield and should be quad core (2 x core 2 duo on the same chip). I believe they're only months away.

@stag

wanky was indeed not the best word to use, but compared to the new core 2 and the future models it does run quite hot and uses more power. It's just that I was surprised (hmm no I wasn't really) that xeons would be the first models

I believe they just wanted to wow the mac people with dual-dual straight away. It would have been seen as a dissapointment if they only had 2 cores (ven if it is the fast core 2 duo). I expect them to get the new Kentsfield chips within half a year.

Honestly i'm not very impressed by the specs, although the entry price on macs seems to be getting better.

Still, i'd think about switching just for the new o.s. That thing looks hella cool, the time travel, all those other features, c'mon, maybe not groundbreaking, but as always they make it look so cool :-)

time travell aka system restore v2... c'mom Ghost, Acronis, Paragon... the built in recover app on Gigabyte and ASUS boards... I would mind having that, nevertheless people who are on Windows for so long, familiar with regedit, mmc console and so on, sure can tweak the OS to a point which they can call it his own.
Even other PC dudes got a hard time geting around my machine, it is all streamlined to serve my individual purposes... BTW "OSX and I" could be very well the tittle of a terror movie.
