Can anyone use this effect in sidechain mode properly (no work-arounds) in Sonar?

Not from an external source. Hopefully, that will be fixed in Sonar 6.

Is sidechaining possible at all in Sonar? eg for 'pumping' with a compressor? I'd've thought it must be ,surely....

Without knowing too much about Sonar myself I would say you should be able to do sidechain with the mono version inserted on a stereo track. It got two inputs and the right input is the sidechain, so all you have to do is pan the signal you want to compress to the left input of the GUP-1 and pan the ducking signal to the right.

Version 5.2 is supposed to support VST 2.4 and includes sidechaning. I don't have 5 (yet), but will be taking advantage of the upgrade to 5 and 6 deal before the month is out.

Personally for sidechaning compressor I use the db-audioware compressor

Does the Kjaerhus gate sidechain work properly in Sonar?
