I have been seeing that $13k price tag quote a lot. I went to the Apple website and built me one and only came to $7500.

Some joker thought it'd be a fair comparison by outfitting the MacPro with 16 GB RAM. Hence the hefty pricetag.

No, the Core Duo / Yonah CPUs are not 64 bit capable. The Core 2 Duo is, but you cannot yet buy a laptop with a Core 2 Duo in it (soon, though). In any case 64bitness is mostly irrelevant for audio today and probably will stay that way for a couple more years.

The price of the Mac Pro is comparable or better than similar workstation-class machines from Dell, IBM, HP, etc, so they are really a fine deal I think. Of course you can customize it to something really expensive if you want, but you certainly don't have to.

Piping in a bit late here, but anyway:

Although user applications are limited to 2GB (or 3GB with /3GB switch) on windows XP, it is still worth going above that because the operating system will use any additional memory for itself. There are some RAM spamming tasks such as maintaining a cache of file read operations.
