i know it's been asked. but i want soft and pretty ones. i'm new to this and so far have been able to get by with the free samples i've found online. but it's getting to the point where i may need to buy a few samples. do any of you know any good libraries? is that what they're called? thanks

Check out the G1 guitar from SampleSmith.com. It's only 10$ and is very nice sounding.
Comes in soundfont format or as a refill for Reason's NN-XT

Wish granted.benjaminwuamett wrote:hmm. i thank you. i just wish i knew what a soundfont was.
Soundfont is just a collection of samples grouped together in one file. That file cotains, esides the samples themselves, instructions for the sampler/ sampler player what sound to play.
For example, a soundfont of a grand piano might include recording of all the keys on the piano, at several levels each. The sample player receive data (MIDI) from your keyoard or your sequencer software telling it what key was struck and how hard. The player, according to the instruction inside the soundfont, will select the appropriate recording and play it back - e.g, C sharp of the third ocatve, at medium level.
Soundfont is actually only one type of such "sample set" or "sample library", but one that is popular for free and cheap samples. The free sfz player is a VST plugin capable of playing such files.
There are other different formats, but soundfonts are pretty much a must if you're looking for free and cheap samples sets.
EDIT: I assumed almost no music technology knowledge on your part. If some or all of the stuff in my explanation is too basic for you, consider that directed toward the future generation of KvRers.
