Hi

I would like to announce the release of PreRoll Recorder.

What is PreRoll Recorder I hear you ask?

PreRoll Recorder is a windows VST effect that records anything that it hears (audio) in a continuous loop, allowing you to save clever things that you did before the record button was pressed.

The initial idea was specifically for guitarists and singers who lose their creativity and passion as soon as they know that they are 'in record' but really PreRoll Recorder could be used far more actively.

On the surface PreRoll Recorder may not seem too exciting as it doesn't make any noises of it's own but if you are one of those ppl who plays something whilst jamming and then wish that you had been recording... well PreRoll Recorder is just the thing for you.

great idea.... too bad i just today purchased tapeit2...

well, maybe the two'll complement each other...

Tape It is a good thing for sure (and looks nice) but it is different to PreRoll Recorder because TapeIt is only linear and is designed to be used actively, whereas PreRoll Recorder is designed to sit in the background (almost forgotten) creating an audio record that can recover golden moments - just like security video.

Tape It is for when you know when and what you want to record. PreRoll Recorder is for when you wish that you had been running something like TapeIt

PreRoll Recorder is having the foresight to avoid hindsight being better than reality

yeah, i know... it's just that i was actually in the thread i think that inspired you to do this plug and wished something like this existed. tapeit2 is cool, cause i can trigger/pause it via note-on or cc, so that's pretty painless as well, no scary red flashes - but you are right, the PreRoll Recorder has that huge advantage of working on its own and at the same time still not filling oup the hd.

i think if i could i'd cancel my tapeit2 order - i'm pretty sure i will get your plug - just afraid i'll never end up using tapeit ever again.

edit: okay, i now bought it. sorry for mentioning that other plug, please tell me if that's rude and i'll remove its name or something.

for everyone else and hink - go buy it. it's extremely useful and costs about as much as 1.5 packs of cigarettes (in germany at least). and i don't smoke, so it's okay i spent it on a vst...

What a GREAT idea! I don't know how many times SX's Retrospective Record function has let me recover some accidental inspiration, but it's only good for MIDI data.

They can run around like idiots in front of 20,000 people and be comfortable but as soon as they know that the engineer has gone into record they cease to be truly emotive.

An old trick was that the engineer would be sneaky and record practice runs without the artists knowing (even going so far as to break the knob off the recorder so the red glow couldn't be seen) in the hope of capturing the real soul of a performance

So true. I was also always in the habit (and still am) of putting some black electrical tape over the red tally light on a video camera, for exactly the same reason.

. But I haven't actaully read that thread. Hink was a factor in my thinking up PreRoll Recorder but that conversation was elsewhere. Your link is posted. Maybe TapeIt2 would make a nice gift for someone who doen't need to be loopy

Not necessarily Android, but this means that now you CAN (so long as the loop is set to at least 30 mins) - and of course for many that is excuse enough

I've used the free TapeIt1, it's just an insert that lets you record a wav file from any insert point in your project (actually, it could record a send too).

My complaints about it are that there's no auto-start feature, so your files that you record are never in sync with the rest of the project. You have to manually click it to start recording, and of course you can't do that at exactly the same time the transport starts.

I haven't tried TapeIt2, http://www.silverspike.com/?Products:TapeIt, but it seems to offer "synchronized" recording in 4 different modes, which must at least mean it can start when the transport starts. That's good.

Problem is, you need to pick a file name, think about it, probably enable it to record. Etc...

With PreRoll recorder, its a totally different paradigm (so I'd say we're comparing apples and oranges, somewhat) as you just turn it on and forget about it. Then if something GOOD happens, and you weren't rolling your HOST's transport or record wasn't activated at the time, you can stop everything and recover the last n minutes of audio from any given insert points. (Anyone with SX should know this as a MIDI feature called Retrospective Record.)

Without having tried it yet, I have a PRR wish list:

- Some form of synchronization (is there a way to put MTC in a wav file so they'll automatically fall into sync when dropped back into the same project you captured them in? If not, then some form of automatic zero fill to make it so you can drop it into the project and butt the head into the start.)

- The ability to run multiple PRR's in one project (for example, say I want one on each audio track!) Maybe this is already possible but I got the sense reading the overview that they'd all use the same filenames and maybe stomp on each other.

EDIT: - ooooh, one more... why not make it detect silence below a certain threshold and make splices between files there? (Within a certain time limit... I do realize this complicates things considerably.)

Do tell...

I just might buy this anyway, still gotta try it though and busy writing code at the moment... will try to get to it before I crash for the night. (Hello Australia! It's midnight here in Ontari-ari-o!

yeah, it's this paradigm i was wishing for, but had given up on finding in vst form anytime in the near future... so great you have released this, benedict.
