Cubase can be installed on more than one computer, but I have a suggestion for live software if you're willing to do a bit of simple connect-boxes-by-wires type of programming: check out the donationware program Usine at http://www.sensomusic.com. It's not a typical VST host or DAW, but geared towards live improvisation and manipulation.

It can do quite more advanced things than what I suspect you're planning on, but it can be used in quite a simple way to.

Bidule anyone? It really is a great live tool. And, yes, Usine is amazing as well. 8)

I still think live Lite + eXT is his best bet

and he can upgrade to full Live later for a decent rice if he want to

Bidule is amazing but in my experience not always stable. Although having said that, for what he wants to do it will probably run just fine
My other host is Bruce Forsyth

Undoubtedly helps being cross platform.
2) most of the artist you are talking weren't computer based musician ...
I probably didn't quite get your point (language) but if you check the full list of Ableton artists it is a fairly even mix between instrumental players, full-on electronic musicians, and DJs. And yes, I suspect that a fairly significant proportion of those people are Mac-based... but overall the Ableton user-base consists of many, many PC users. So on their forum we can all have lots of good debates about that issue

yes i was only talking about their featured power users

Certainly no act I have ever seen and enjoyed. That kind of carry-on is disgustingly self-indulgent, it makes me sick.
chrom wrote:what do you mean with "less taxing"? is EnergyXT better than cubase & would be ok? or is it like cubase?
Without having done a direct comparison, eXT seems to have been built to have a much smaller footprint - to use as little RAM or CPU as possible. It certainly "feels" very efficient, running it as a VSTi with other VSTi running inside it seems just as efficient, CPU-wise, as just running the other VSTi by themselves.

Who knows or cares? I got nothing to do with them, although the fewer idiots that use it, the better it is for the rest of us.
Do you actually know who John Scofield is? I'm just curious; I'm aware of the fact that you hate everyone that's not you.
He'd be the guitarist who said this:
"I wanted to make a real jazz-improvising statement in a live situation with two of my favorite musicians... You don't rely on arrangements as much as on the way the group plays together. You don't rely on anything other than good playing, and you know there's no lifejacket or safety net involved."
Obviously he knows more about using computers to make music than anyone else, right? I mean, all you need to do is look at the extensive equipment list on his site to see he's all over the latest and greatest things happenning in the world of computer music.

You won't be too offended if I skip that one, will you? Sounds like the very death of entertainment to me.
I can easily imagine the need to insert effects or tracks or whatever in realtime without stopping everything else.
As I asked previously, couldn't you do that with pretty much any host?

Blah, blah, blah.. Did you even notice that the guy says he doesn't want to do live arrangement?

Does anyone replying on this thread even have a brain? Do any of you understand what "rehearsal" is? Or that Live migh tonly actually be good for a certain type of live performance which just may have absolutely nothing to do with what Chrom needs?

I still think that pretty much any host will do what you need,
Chrom, so your decision may well come down to price. The big advantage of something like eXT is that it can be loaded into itself as a VSTi, so you could have each of your song load an instance of the VSTi inside eXT. So you would programme everything one song at a time and then load eXT with 10 VSTi versions [or however many you need], with each one loaded with a different song. Then you can sequence the song order in the master instance. I've not tried it but it should work.

Not without risking audio dropouts, etc, no. Live's gapless audio engine give a higher degree of prioritisation to continuity than most other hosts do. If I tried to do the stuff Live handels "gaplessly" in Sonar, Tracktion, Audition, etc, often the audio would break up or simply stop.

Well for starters you obviously don't dig jazz - or attenpt to really understand it's context/culture. Which is perfectly fair enough of course  .

Most modern jazz players are pretty versatile instrumentalists who enjoy wide variety in their work. But in terms of technology you need to put John's statements and website in the context of the fact he has a BAND. And in that band, the other memebers all contribute too (radical, huh?). One of his band is Avi Bortnick, who handles the technology side of their performances. By using Live on stage - which they consider to be a "member of the band" :!: - they can be as entirely spontaneous as they like (as per the quote from John you cited), while still including electronic elements.

I realise that is not what you are personally into, and I also realise that it goes well beyond what Chrom was requesting. But given the thread title, it is not suprising that several people jumped in suggesting Live (I was not one of them of course - I only joined in once people started debating Live's features).

No, I won't be offended if you don't show up. What's offensive is that you seem to think that if anyone is doing something you don't want to do (or attend) they're ridiculous idiots. That's where I might get a wee bit offended.

Don't really know - the guy said Live has some kind of special never-stopping audio engine. I have no idea about the validity of that statement (or the uniqueness of it if it's true), I was just confirming the possibility of a need for on-the-fly insertion of something while not interrupting the performance, which was too ridiculous for you to even contemplate.

Really? That seems to have been an obsession with plenty of ORION users for as long as I can remember so I figured it was how everything else performed. As a consequence I'm pretty sure I can do all that kind of stuff without any glitching, etc.

I have a band and we contribute very evenly. In fact the next album will feature considerably more of Sik's work than mine.

I think that if you want to understand the mindset of such folk, you need look no further than the first post in this thread:

Here's a professional guy with an interest in computer music who really knows f**k all about what is available. All the products he's listed are boxes available from music retailers, nothing more. There's a whole 'nuther world out there that the mainstream of music professionals are completely ignorant of.
