Well, simply by virtue of the way an orchestra is put together you're not going to get a 'big string sound' by use of one or two presets spread across the range of your keyboard.

I guess you could layer Double Bass, Cello, Viola, Violin (all [ensemble][sustain] presets) and set them all to MIDI Channel 1, but you risk ending up with a very muddy sound as most of the time you're trying to combine different sections with their own parts.

How are you finding the Roland Strings? I have it, but K2 did a terrible job of importing. Not so much the sample quality or anything, but I don't think the preset names it came up with resemble anything in the accompanying preset leaflet. :|

But you might get a (less realistic) but more powerful sound from the Roland Strings than trying to layer VSL in K2.

If you really mean "full string orchestra sound", yes you can achieve that by playing in each section's part individually on its own midi channel and then adding a good convo reverb to taste.
OTOH if you really mean "string pad" (played keyboard style), I don't think VSL is your best bet for that, although you could probably program a suitable instrument or multi from the individual sections.

Roland Strings? Elaborate on that more, please.

Oh. I thought you picked up Roland Ultimate Strings in the EastWest blow-out sale Ron? Maybe I imagined it???

It's not anywhere near as realistic as VSL, but (presuming you can make head or tail out of Kontakt's dreadful importing) some of the presets are more warm and powerful. Being a bit more layered they are quite strong sounding. I think some of the presets have up to 34 violins in them.

AFAIK, it's still 95% off. http://www.soundsonline.com/Ultimate-St ... W-094.html (there's a sound example demo on that page. Not very realistic for complex orchestral work, but has a good "Hollywood" style sound and at 95% off I think it's an absolute steal.)

Oh THAT one, that only worked as "Roland Format" (cause it was the only one left at the store). I didn't get it at the at the blow-out sale, cause I had a different focus and I have Siedlaczek Classical Collections, not to mention an E-MU Virtuoso.

I thought you were talking about included Roland string samples in the Kontakt patches or from some other source. Then again, try SF2s like "Cadenza Strings" (please google) or "String Quartet", hell even "Squidfont". Layer the stuff, and try to get the sound you want via this way.
